Sewing 101: recycled paper basket. Thanks to a few recent online purchases, I had an enormous pile of long brown packing paper strips in my studio. I couldn’t bear to just recycle it; it seemed to have so much crafty potential. So tasked with the challenge of creating a project to help get organized for the new year, I decided to turn that pile of paper into a woven basket. Folded into strips and edged with stitching, the paper took on a whole new quality that calls to mind upholstery webbing or even leather.

This project is super easy to do, takes only an afternoon and is a great way to give new life to leftover materials. Let’s get started! Read the full how-to after the jump! Materials long lengths of paper (I used packing paper, but wallpaper scraps or gift wrap would work great, too.)sewing machineglue or hot gluepaperclips Instructions 1. Starting with a large piece of paper (mine was 30″ wide), begin folding the strips. Next, sew along one edge of the strip, about 1/8″ or so from the folded edge. 2. 3. And that’s it! Cross-Stitch iPhone Cases. I freely admit to being one of those people who stands on the street corner with my iPhone, checking emails, looking for the closest Chinese restaurant, and calling my mom... all at the same time.

But as a crafter and general lover of all things homey and handmade, I’ve longed to somehow make this sleek plastic piece of technology fit into my aesthetic worldview a little better. So, when the Leese Design Cross Stitch iPhone Case arrived at Purl Soho I could feel my crafty fingers just itching to give it a try. I couldn’t decide if I wanted a modern, punchy and fun design, like the iPhone's , or if I'd prefer an ironic twist, juxtaposing four year-old technology with centuries-old craft.

So, I made two! The Bird in a Tree version of the iPhone case, features a pattern from Caroline Vincent’s Sampler Workbook: Motifs & Patterns, an expansive collection of cross-stitch themes from the 17th through 19th centuries. For the striped design, I turned to the classic 6-ply DMC embroidery floss. 31 Insanely Easy And Clever DIY Projects. Plant an Easter Garden. This amazing idea is from Melissa Holt.

Plant an Easter Garden! Start this planting project at least 10 days before Easter, so this year 2012 no later than March 29th- great Spring Break project for kids! Take a flat terracotta pot base and fill it with potting soil until you have a small mound. Nudge a small terracotta flower pot under the high part of the mound so just the mouth shows to act as the tomb.

Put some small pebbles in front of the mouth of the small flower pot as shown, then add one large rock to the right side so you can still see the mouth of the pot. Make three small crosses with natural twigs and jute or wire. Stick them on the top of the mound. Sprinkle semi shade or full shade grass seed over the top of the potting soil (which do better in a tabletop garden), following planting directions from the package. Would be a wonderful natural centerpiece for Easter brunch or dinner and a beautiful explanation of the empty tomb and meaning of Easter. The Salt Company. Tulle Pom Pom Tutorial. Ok, on my last post I showed you a pic of tulle Pom Poms! I love them! You can use them for a variety of things. Step 2: Cut a piece of String (rope, twine, ribbon, etc...). Step 3: Wrap strips of tulle around and around.... Just Keep wrapping After you have finished wrapping, you will cut the tulle sandwich open :) Now, Find your string and tighten your knot. Pull the cardboard pieces of of each side. New Nostalgia. Hand Stitching, part 1 - LA. One of my favorite crafts is hand stitching-- it's fun, addictive, expressive and relaxing :) Over the next few weeks, I'm going to share easy ways to make your own patterns for hand stitching along with some tips and ideas :) These are some samples of my past projects-- I like to draw patterns freehand and use my handwriting. However, sometimes I adapt clipart type images to make a more complicated pattern, like the sewing machine or I just stitch the outline of an image I love, like the Goonies "Hey You Guys" silhouette :) I use a Back Stitch for all my hand stitching because it's very versatile and I like the look but you can use any combination of stitches for your projects... there's lots of fun ones!

Today, we're going to start with handwriting & transferring your pattern :) You will Need: - Card-stock or Thick Paper (I cut a piece of 6x8" card-stock & folded it in half to create a greeting card) - Needle & Scissors - Embroidery Thread - Scrap Paper & Pen - Thumbtack or Piercing Tool. OH SO LOVELY VINTAGE.

Ok, first you need to gather your supplies. Here is what I used: E6000 - I used this because it's flexible and waterproof.Tiny scissors - makes trimming close to the sole much easierFabric scrapsOptional embellishments - I used embroidery floss and buttons Go ahead and first repair any holes. Then stuff your shoe with anything. Ok, next I placed a large scrap over the top of my TOMS in the same shape that was already there. Cover the area in E6000. Let the glue dry for a minute so that it's nice and tacky. Next grab another scrap of fabric and make sure it fits along the shoe.

Lay your next strip down and repeat steps above. On the side where the TOMS tag is I cut little slits in the fabric so it would slide easily behind the tag. That's it!!! Song Lyric Wall Art / D.I.Y. Project - A Beautiful Mess - StumbleUpon. A couple weeks ago, I found a paint-by-number at an unbeatable price. I can't pass these things up even though I already owned this particular design. I thought that I could maybe use it to make a fun D.I.Y., but my new rule is that all thrifts that I purchase with the intent of restyling need to get done right away. I have way too many half finished projects in my life. With that little bit of motivation I came up with a fun D.I.Y. to display some of my favorite song lyrcis in our newlywed home.

Mason Jar Key Hook - StumbleUpon. Hey guys! Hope you all had a great Wednesday I have a fun project to share today! I started with a 1×8 board from Lowe’s that I cut to about 2′ long.

I used a different paint method on this board and I love how it turned out so I am going to share it with you in my next post. So for now… Here is my board after it is painted and ready to go. I also purchased 3 hooks and a pipe clamp from Lowe’s. My next step was attaching them to my board. Then it was time to attach the clamp. I used a 3/4″ wood screw to attach it to my board. Finally, I added to picture hangers to the back of it and hung it up.

I love it. I’m thinking these would be super cute hand towel hooks for the bathroom. Thanks for stopping by! I will show you my new paint method in my next post so stay tuned. ~Whitney. Photos by Rich and Brenna Neeley For Apple product users, the style is minimalist and modern, right? But what if you love both your iPhone, and all things vintage? What if you love both your minimalist iPhone, and the clutter of old, beautiful books on your desk? Well, there's an iPhone dock that will give you both. Rich and Brenna Neeley -- aka Inbook on Etsy -- make iPhone charging docks out of books. About half of their products are real vintage and salvaged books, and about half are new vintage-style books (since some people want even old stuff to be crisp and shiny). The Neeley's write, "As a Comparitive Lit. major, Brenna chooses to recycle only those books that won't be given their due acknowledgement elsewhere.

" And, they let me know that they use felt and yarn that are recycled from post-consumer plastic bottles in their packaging. You can have a single book, or two to three piled atop one another.
