Twitter. Twitter. Changing "Classics": What Do We Want? Not What Some People Keep Saying We Want. By Rebecca Kennedy and Maximus Planudes At the end of my last blog post, I (RFK) pleaded for an immediate halt to uninformative, poorly written, inaccurate responses to the recent New York Times Magazine article, which focused on our colleague Dan-el Padilla Peralta and current debates in the discipline known as "Classics".

Changing "Classics": What Do We Want? Not What Some People Keep Saying We Want

Why this heartfelt plea? Isn't open debate good?! Only if those involved in the debate understand the ideas and commit to representing them accurately. No, Classics Shouldn’t ‘Burn’ N “If Classics Doesn’t Change, Let It Burn,” Johanna Hanink insists that she “would rather see the current incarnation of classics burn than fossilize.“ She is, she says, “eager for a fire that will make way for healthy new growth.”

No, Classics Shouldn’t ‘Burn’

At a time when classics departments are facing cuts and even closure across the English-speaking world, this doesn’t seem like the most helpful set of recommendations. Why is Hanink, who teaches in the classics department at Brown University and has done some solid work on classical Athens (my own period of study), apparently so keen for her field to go up in flames? Some people, Hanink says, “feel threatened” by her critique, which they see as “an attack not only on Western civilization but on the United States’s putative leading role in it.” 'Witch' tweets reflect society's fear of older women, says Mary Beard. The academic and broadcaster Mary Beard has said she is frequently branded a witch in an attempt to discredit her and older women generally.

'Witch' tweets reflect society's fear of older women, says Mary Beard

Beard, who is professor of classics at the University of Cambridge and the presenter of BBC Two’s Inside Culture, drew a parallel between witch trials of the past and the kind of online abuse she receives now. Writing in this week’s Radio Times, she said: “Throughout many periods of history in the west there has been a real worry about what you do with women who are past their childbearing years. As I can confirm, women with long grey hair can make people anxious. “In the ancient Greek and the ancient Roman world they worried that old women were sexual predators. We’ve inherited many of their anxieties and these still fuel the insults some men throw at women today.

Teaching Yourself Latin and Greek. In college too many decades ago, I was a classics and ancient history Ph,D. candidate.

Teaching Yourself Latin and Greek

I did not stay in the field and did not keep up with the languages. But a little more than a year ago, beginning to plan for retirement, I decided to resurrect my Greek and Latin. I have been pretty successful, teaching myself. So drawing on this experience, I would like to provide some useful facts, opinions, and recommended resources for an English-speaking person trying to decide how to learn or relearn classical Latin or Greek outside the school or university system. Twitter. Come and Take It: The End of Eidolon. Late in the afternoon on November 5, 2020 — close to 24 hours after polls across the country had closed for the 2020 elections — the NRA tweeted a familiar phrase: “Come and Take It.”

Who preserved Greek literature? (Part 2)

Some readers pointed out that I should have told the true story, as well as dismantling the myth. So here we go. But first, I’d better repeat that it is a myth. Great Arab and Persian scholars like Averroes and Avicenna were proactive innovators, not passive pipelines for getting texts from A to B. Recently I realised that, for many people, the Arabic transmission myth doesn’t just apply to Greek texts, but to Latin texts too! Who preserved Greek literature? Charlotte Higgins has written a compelling and remarkably clear piece, finding her way through the intricacy of the events. Travel back in time with the 'Google Maps' of Ancient Rome. Summer is now well-underway across Europe and many of us are planning our holiday escape with travel comparison websites and web mapping services. Low-cost air carriers, fast trains, and cross-national motorways have made travelling across the Old Continent a quick and often cheap affair. But let's imagine that cars, trains and planes haven't been invented yet and that your options are limited to ox or mule cart and ships. Researchers at Stanford University have used modern technology to answer by creating a web mapping version of Ancient Rome. Their model, called ORBIS, consists of 632 sites spread across 10 million square kilometres of terrestrial and maritime space, covering most of modern Western Europe and the Mediterranean coast in North Africa and the Middle East.

The tool generates solutions for travel between any two sites depending on specific means and mode of transport and the months of the year, providing different options based on time and expense.
