The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for mathematics were revised and adopted by the State Board of Education (SBOE) in April 2012. The Student Assessment Division of TEA, in coordination with the Curriculum Division, convened advisory committees in October 2013 to make recommendations about the implementation of the new TEKS in the STAAR mathematics assessments.

Student Assessment Home | Assessment A–Z Directory | Contact Student Assessment In spring 2012, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) replaced the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). The STAAR program includes annual assessments for grades 3–8 in reading and mathematics; assessments in writing at grades 4 and 7; in science at grades 5 and 8; and in social studies at grade 8; and end-of-course assessments for English I, English II, Algebra I, biology and U.S history. Additionally, STAAR EOC assessments for English III and Algebra II will be administered on a voluntary basis beginning in spring 2016. The objectives, which are the reporting units for each test, are consistent from year to year.
The intent of showing both the objective and the student expectation for each item on the TAKS answer keys is to help school personnel better analyze test results.
