Character Study « Analysis of The Glass Castle

Obviously, as a mother, this woman is sub par. She can easily be characterized as illogical, weak, and selfish. She makes no attempt to get her kids out of a horrible home situation, and she’s obviously completely aware of the degree of how rough all of this would be on her family. Her failures and bad decisions aren’t results of misguided attempts of providing what’s best for her kids- that would be forgivable and easier to accept- they’re out of appeasing her husband . I’m not exactly an expert at parenting, but it seems like all the books would say that having your children’s best interests at heart would be the very minimum, but she missed the mark by a mile. I call her weak because the book is in her daughter’s point of view, and she was never once portrayed or deserving of respect.
