The Biology Corner. This worksheet provides steps for identifying structures of the grasshopper, with a focus on the external anatomy and mouthparts.
The lesson can be part of a larger unit on insects … In animals, form and function are closely related. This premier collection exhibits how to use standard pieces of laboratory equipment essential in many experiments, as well as how to perform basic laboratory functions.
Each video is paired with additional video resources for you to view practical applications of the technique and other complementary skills. This Science Education video collection demonstrates how to execute basic techniques commonly used in cellular and molecular biology. To enhance your understanding of the methods each video is paired with additional video resources to show practical applications of the techniques and other complementary skills. This unique Science Education collection features three model organisms commonly used in life sciences research: S. cerevisiae (Baker’s Yeast), D. melanogaster (the fruit fly), and C. elegans (nematode roundworm). JoVE’s fifth Science Education collection provides an introduction to the field of neuroscience. S BioInteractive. Trying to Fool Cancer. Photo CLEVELAND — WHEN it airs on Monday, the Ken Burns-produced documentary “Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies” will emphasize how much more we now know about the genetic basis for .
This year, according to President Obama, cancer research and funding will focus on so-called precision, personalized or targeted medicine — using cancer’s molecular underpinnings to develop drugs that attack the genes or gene products that make up cancer’s factory while sparing normal cells. What a beautiful concept. The problem is, cancer is rarely that simple, or that easily fooled. Three recent studies, all published or presented late last year, highlight the challenges of building a national cancer therapy policy around precision medicine. The first, from me and my colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic in collaboration with Japanese researchers, performed genetic analyses on more than 600 patients with one of two related bone marrow cancers: myelodysplastic syndromes or acute myeloid leukemia.

BioInteractive’s virtual labs have won several awards, including top honors in the Pirelli INTERNETional Award competition, which recognizes the best multimedia products designed to use the Internet to educate about science and technology.
Designed in close consultation with educators and scientists, these virtual labs are fully interactive biomedical laboratory simulations and provide students with skills and techniques used in scientific research. BioInteractive’s series of virtual labs allows students to examine heart patients, analyze DNA sequences, probe the nervous system of a leech, use human antibodies to diagnose disease, and measure physical traits of stickleback fish and anole lizards to examine key concepts in evolution. Each lab provides an interactive environment in which students perform experiments and collect their data, and answer questions to assess their understanding.
The labs can be accessed by clicking the icons on the right-hand side of the page.

West Nile virus infects mosquitoes, birds, and people—with very different consequences. Lactose tolerance, sickle cell anemia, and bitter taste perception are three examples of recently evolved human traits. Lactase persistence results from a mutation that changes how transcription factors interact, thereby affecting gene expression. This survey, developed by Horne and Ostberg, will let you determine if you are a morning or an evening person. Answer the questions in this online quiz to test your knowledge of what determines the sex of a human, a fruit fly, and a snapping turtle.
