Recently, we found ourselves in one of those situations. All of the sudden, we started noticing references to the same thing or the same person popping up in a variety of different social circles. It was one of those when-it-rains-it-pours scenarios. In this case we noticed it with a handful of wiser, well-experienced architects.
And again with some younger cutting edge architects. And on blogs. And then it came up at dinner parties. It was undeniable: All roads were suddenly leading to Sigurd Lewerentz. Griffa. Alexander Brodsky | Russian Dreams. About works Alexander Brodsky was one of the leaders in a galaxy of outstanding Russian 'paper architects' from the late 1970s to 1980s. He has won many international competitions for Utopian architectural projects. During that period there was reduced construction in the Soviet Union and only standard designs were permitted. Paper Utopias were essentially underground activity, and in the building boom of the New Russia that followed there was no demand for them – they clashed with New Russian style.
Alexander Brodsky's work was circulated in the art world and shown at museums and art biennales. His 'Settlement' project was exhibited in the Russian Pavilion at the 2006 Venice Architecture Biennale, and subsequently in the first private Russian museum of contemporary art, ART4.ru. A city and at the same time the metaphor of a city familiar to all from a sense of winter loneliness, of being lost in a vast megapolis, appears in his 'barrel organ' like a vision in a magic casket. At the beginning of his career, Alexander Brodsky is part of the “paper-architecture“ movement even though at that point, at the beginning of the eighties, there is no movement in the true sense yet. The notion “paper-architecture” rather expresses a typical limitation to architectural creativity in the Soviet Union of the time: Young architects who would refuse to fit in with the established architecture system would have no means to carry out their projects, and therefore design only for presentation or indeed just for the paper.

Es ist als solitärer Kubus konzipiert, dessen Erscheinung eine von innen nach außen entwickelte Form darstellt.
Durch seine Situierung im bestehenden Umfeld entsteht ein spannungsvoller Dialog zwischen dem sehr kleinen, abstrakten Volumen und dem dominanten alten Schulgebäude. Die beiden Baukörper sind sich nahe, ohne sich zu berühren, sie schaffen eine räumliche Situation, ohne einen richtigen Hof zu bilden. Die Blickbeziehungen zum umliegenden Naturraum werden nicht aufgehoben, sondern für den Betrachter spannungsvoller und klarer.
Die Erschließung des Gebäudes orientiert sich über einen neu projektierten Weg Richtung Westen zum Dorf, eine zusätzliche Zugangsmöglichkeit ist östlich der Schule gegeben. Das Probelokal ist ein introvertierter Kubus mit bewusst gerichteten, objektivartigen Ausblicken und Lichteinlässen.
