5 Computers From the Days Before Computers

It's electronic, high-tech and digital. It's only existed for the last 50 or 60 years. It has defined the word "modern" in “modern world.” And it’s given hackers a useful role to play in big-budget action movies. But computers actually date back thousands of years. 1. A mysterious object recovered from a shipwreck, this first-century device has stunned researchers.

When recovered in 1901, its discoverers had no idea of its origin or purpose. In recent years, computed tomography scans have revealed even more intricacies. 2. Wikimedia Commons Gottfried Leibniz, a German mathematician and all-around genius (he created differential calculus), invented the first four-function calculator in 1673.

There was a fairly significant problem with Leibniz’s device, though. 3. Wikimedia Commons The most famous analogue computers were created—although not fully built—by the English pioneer Charles Babbage. 4. Wikimedia Commons Babbage didn't stop to mourn. 5. We Dare You to Play These Scores!

Many composers are prefering non-standard music notation, and some musicians are ambitious enough to perform these impossible pieces, for the enjoyment of increasingly dumbfounded listeners. So, we dare you to play these scores!... Although it may be hazardous to your mental health. (right: Sylvano Bussotti's "Mobile-Stabile per Chitarre, Canto e Piano", see below) We'll start with this piece, which is supposed to be played "friggin' fast", so you'd better get crackin' - (image via) Here is a Canadian composer Murray Schafer's "Divan I Shams I Tabriz" (for Orchestra, seven singers and electronic sounds) - more info: (image via) The following beautiful piece of music is the "Faerie's Aire And Death Waltz" (from "A Tribute To Zdenko G.

Strangest Music Scores, Part 2

Music written by aliens to be played by aliens (who will have a few extra limbs to spare). We did not exhaust this subject by any means, however, as new examples of this highly-ordered and extremely sophisticated madness (a secret vice for many a composer, perhaps...) kept popping up. Pavane of the Reconstituted Visigoths Andy Fielding sent us his new creation (he says "I do this kind of thing each time I change notation apps"): Gotta love his copyright / disclaimer note: (score credit: Andy Fielding, Musician, Composer, Music Editor, Richmond, BC) Be careful when performing this piece, you may find that your audience will start climbing up the walls, so aim your instrument gradually toward the ceiling to improve acoustics.

Simplicity itself! (image via) A Tribute to Serge Gainsbourg.
