Boeing Lands $30B+ Pentagon Contract - Stocks To Watch Today. By Teresa Rivas Shares of Boeing (BA) are flying high in premarket trading after the aerospace giant announced late yesterday that the Pentagon awarded it a contract to build as many as 179 aerial refueling tankers, a contract that could ultimately be worth as much as $35 billion.

However, not everyone is happy with the decision. The losing bidder, the North American arm of the European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. had proposed building plants to complete the job in U.S. states, prompting protest from the governors of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, who have already sent letters to President Obama on the subject. The move may also reinforce the idea that the U.S. defense market, by far the world’s largest, remains effectively closed to foreign companies. Still, Boeing’s victory will also support as many as 50,000 manufacturing jobs in the U.S. and could also re-awake interest in the market for the company’s 767, on which its proposal was based.

If you listen much to Cedar Rapids news you hear very often that Mayor Ron Corbett wants to make sure that both sides of the river receive protection from the flood. What he never explains with his “sympathetic” protection plan is that it involves eradicating the homes in Time Check and Czech Village. One side note here: How can you have a village with no homes? The advocates of many flood affected families have worked hard to make sure that before election day that both Governors know the truth behind the Preferred Plan.

We do want flood protection on the west side of the river, we also want the right to keep our property and homes. The City of Cedar Rapids has so many great things about it. Flood. The topic of flood protection in Cedar Rapids has been ongoing ever since the waters retreated two years ago. In residential areas north of Quaker, the proposal was to raze homes adjacent to the river and build a series of berms and greenways that could serve as recreational space while also offering flood protection. For the more urban downtown area where buildings jut up to the riverfront, the city had proposed a system of removable flood walls. However, the latest recommendation from the Army Corps of Engineers is to build a series of permanent 13-15 foot high flood walls along the east side of the river, while the west side receives no flood protection at all.

The total cost for the system would be $116 million, offering a benefit-to-cost ratio of 1.08 that would meet the Corps minimum requirement of 1. CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa —City officials barked, and FEMA listened. Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state of Iowa came to City Hall on Wednesday to tell the city that FEMA would provide $19.5 million in disaster funding for the city to build its new public library on the site of the City Council’s choosing – a site that now houses the TrueNorth Companies across from Greene Square Park. The FEMA decision had been the one that city officials said FEMA representatives in Iowa had led them to expect for months.

Then last week, those same FEMA officials said the TrueNorth site was too expensive and that the city should use another option that the city long ago discarded and thought FEMA had, too. That is, that the city demolish its flood-ruined library on First Street SE and build a new one there on higher ground. On Wednesday, Elliott said he was happy FEMA returned to the ruling the city had long expected. FEMA put the cost of the TrueNorth site at $24 million. TrueNorth still willing to talk about library site.

Published: January 8 2010 | 5:45 pm - Updated: 30 March 2014 | 5:03 pm in The TrueNorth site may have been eliminated by the library board, but owners of the building are still willing to negotiate with the city to make way for a new library there. “Until City Council votes and they sign a contract and buy a piece of real estate, who knows what’s going to happen,” said Randy Rings, general counsel for TrueNorth. The TrueNorth block south of Greene Square Park was one of two potential library sites the library board decided not to recommend to the City Council at a meeting Thursday. The board decided to begin negotiations with owners of the Emerald Knights block at the corner of Second Avenue and Eighth Street SE and the Gazette Communications block on the north corner of Greene Square Park.

The TrueNorth site — despite its appeal in looking across the park at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art — didn’t make the cut because parking and a construction schedule are too uncertain. Council Chooses TrueNorth for New Library Site. CEDAR RAPIDS – Cedar Rapids city council voted 7-2 in favor of building a new library on the TrueNorth Property which sits across the street from Greene Square Park. The TrueNorth site is more expensive than the other two options, but the council felt this spot was the best choice for the community. "We want to support something together and move forward and make it happen,” council member Chuck Swore said. The council chose TrueNorth because it's close to Greene Square Park, near the heart of the downtown and fits into the council's overall vision for the city.

Council members Don Karr and Chuck Wieneke were the only two dissenting votes. They voted for Emerald Knights location because of reservations about the TrueNorth site. "The two top items I had were the fear of future flooding affecting the library and cost for those two reasons. Just a few weeks ago, the Library Board unanimously selected the Gazette Communications block as its top choice.
