Karuizawa 1964 for Poland. Post by Stefan of Tokyo Whisky Hub. Today, we’re delighted to be able to finally share one of the best-kept whisky secrets: the release of an extraordinary 1964 Karuizawa. Drawn from cask #3603 after more than 48 years of maturation, this is the oldest Karuizawa released to date. Michal Kowalski of the Polish investment company Wealth Solutions wanted a worthy follow-up to his Glenfarclas 1953 and he knew, right from the start, this was going to be a Karuizawa.
It was a long process from wish to reality – we were there when the whole project was conceived and were honoured to be able to help in small ways along the road – and the loving care and attention to detail Michal surrounded this exceptional whisky with is simply beyond words. Most whisky enthusiasts will remember the Glenflarclas 1953, bottled on 13 February 2012. The 1964 Karuizawa will be launched in Warsaw exactly one year later.

This list contains all the (legal) malt whisky distilleries in Scotland that have been active since +/- 1975. Hundreds of other distilleries that were active in the 18th, 19th and 20th century are not listed, simply because the odds of ever finding a (genuine) bottle of the whisky are astronomically slim. "Antique' bottles appearing at auctions and on eBay are usually dodgy. The concept of 'ranking' distilleries also deserves an explanation. This craft distillery, owned and run by Bryan Davis and Joanne Haruta, captured my attention when reading about their 110ppm peat giant, aptly named Leviathan I. I still tend to associate whiskey production in the US with bourbons, so when hearing about a single malt being produced in Cali that gives Islay’s heavily peated whiskies a run for their money I just had to find out more so I got in touch with the folks at Lost Spirits and they were more than happy to appease my curiosity. It isn’t every day we get to write about a product before anyone else on the planet. Recently I was one of the first people to ever taste Lost Spirits’ inaugural whiskey release, poured from a bottle so fresh the label hadn’t even been printed for it. With only 170 or 180 bottles produced, Seascape is one of the rarest whiskeys on earth, but if this unique spirit sounds like it’s up your alley, you should be able to nab a bottle before it’s all gone, if you act fast… and have all of 50 bucks to spend on it.
