Bleedingcool. Google, like Amazon, will let police see your video without a warrant. Arlo, Apple, Wyze, and Anker, owner of Eufy, all confirmed to CNET that they won’t give authorities access to your smart home camera’s footage unless they’re shown a warrant or court order. If you’re wondering why they’re specifying that, it’s because we’ve now learned Google and Amazon are doing just the opposite: they allow police to get this data without a warrant if police claim there’s been an emergency. Earlier this month my colleague Sean Hollister wrote about how Amazon, the company behind the smart doorbells and security systems, will indeed give police that warrantless access to customers’ footage in those “emergency” situations.

And as CNET now points out, Google’s privacy policy has a similar carveout as Amazon’s, meaning law enforcement can access data from its Nest products — or theoretically any other data you store with Google — without a warrant. Earlier this month, Amazon disclosed that it had already fulfilled 11 such requests this year. Gunman in ‘Pizzagate’ Shooting Is Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison. Florida's top child porn collector details his obsession. CENTURY, Fla. — Not today. Maybe tomorrow. For months, the man behind the computer had grown used to uttering those words to himself, mostly to fend off the increasing fear that somebody, maybe even the FBI, was watching his every prohibited keystroke. Though there was indeed grave reason to worry, he could not — would not — stop. The 52-year-old retired Navy communications specialist had transformed his desktop computer, laptop, electronic notebook and multiple external hard drives into vast reservoirs of illicit images featuring sexually compromised children, some as young as 1.

Many days, his computer never stopped humming as thousands of new photographs and videos of abused toddlers and preteens poured into Apartment 108 on Wild Harbor Lane near Orlando as if flowing from an open spigot of evil. Among the most horrific: the image of a girl no more than 7 with the words "cut me'' and "hurt me'' scrawled in red on her naked body, as a knife is brandished in the child's direction. Robots are starting to break the law and nobody knows what to do about it -- Fusion.

Maybe it’s a sign that robots are growing up, and thus hitting the rebellious stage. The Random Darknet Shopper, an automated online shopping bot with a budget of $100 a week in Bitcoin, is programmed to do a very specific task: go to one particular marketplace on the Deep Web and make one random purchase a week with the provided allowance. The purchases have all been compiled for an art show in Zurich, Switzerland titled The Darknet: From Memes to Onionland, which runs through January 11. The concept would be all gravy if not for one thing: the programmers came home one day to find a shipment of 10 ecstasy pills, followed by an apparently very legit falsified Hungarian passport– developments which have left some observers of the bot’s blog a little uneasy.

If this bot was shipping to the U.S., asks Forbes contributor and University of Washington law professor contributor Ryan Calo, who would be legally responsible for purchasing the goodies? The coders? Or the bot itself? Fine. Serial Killer File: John George Haigh | SERIOUSLY STRANGE. The Media Needs to Stop Inspiring Copycat Murders. Here's How. - Zeynep Tufekci. After a wave of teen suicides in the 1980s, news outlets began reporting on these deaths more cautiously. Similar guidelines could help prevent more shooting sprees. After the Newtown shootings, newspapers printed detailed information about the killer and his methods.

(McClatchy Papers) You might not have noticed, but the mass media rarely reports on suicides, particularly teen suicides. This is for good reason: Suicide, especially among teens, is contagious. This, for example, is exactly why political campaigns ask people about where and how they plan to vote -- imagined events are more likely to be carried out in real life. In the Middle Ages, psychosis may have involved visions of the devil. Indeed, the rate of mass public shootings in the United States has been accelerating. My aim here is not to blame the media: such events have undeniable news value, and there is intense public interest in uncovering their details. With that as a model, here are some initial recommendations. 1. 2. The Zodiac Killer, one of the greatest unsolved serial killer cases. — A Look at Lake Berryessa. The Lake Berryessa attack offered several examples of odd behavior on the part of the Zodiac.

There is, for instance, the four-cornered hood that he put on just before approaching the couple: its design is rare, if not unique, and the killer made no attempt to explain it either to the students or to the press. Presumably, he wished to conceal his identity, but this could have been accomplished less ostentatiously with a ski mask or similarly common item. As a reason for attacking Shepard and Hartnell, he had a fabricated story about escaping from prison in the northwest, yet signed the car door with his easily recognizable crossed-circle logo and murder chronology.

It should be noted that he omitted from this chronology the Riverside murder, which was not attributed to him until 1970, leading many to view this omission as evidence that the Zodiac was not, in fact, responsible for the murder of Cheri Jo Bates. Michigan Batman Arrested (Again) for Interfering with Police. This May 11, 2011 photo provided by the Petoskey, Mich., Department of Public Safety shows Mark Williams dressed as Batman at the Emmet County jail.

(AP Photo/Petoskey Department of Public Safety via Petoskey News-Review) Mark Williams isn’t waiting for Halloween to dress up and play superhero. The Petoskey, Mich. man recently showed up to an accident scene dressed as Batman, convinced he could help. The cops, however, were having none of it and arrested the superhero wannabe for obstructing and resisting police during an investigation. On Sept. 29, Williams, 33, arrived at a crime scene he’d discovered by tuning in to a police scanner. Police confiscated his Batman outfit and gear and charged him with resisting and obstructing police in an investigation. Superheroes Don’t Take No for an Answer – Even from Police Williams has gotten into trouble in his Batman persona before. Not only did he continue wearing his outfit, apparently, he also attracted a sidekick. Professor Bruce Boyden. "For us, it was a guru accident"

'Leonardo da Vinci' of fraud Over a 10-year period, Thierry Tilly convinced a French family they were threatened by freemasons and paedophiles, defrauding them of more than $5 million. 14, 2012 October 4, 2012, the criminal court of Bordeaux: Thierry Tilly, 48, appeared almost priest-like as he peered over the edge of the dock and listened to the prosecution for nearly seven long hours. A slight man with rimless glasses, he either stared at his shoes or gazed at the 41 boxes neatly arranged under a monumental painting of Christ on the cross. At his trial, which began on September 24, Tilly faced charges of emprise mentale (brainwashing), kidnapping and torture, including "acts of barbarism". Tilly had been able to convince the family that they'd been targeted for death by a secret Masonic order that coveted their wealth, and that he alone was their saviour.

A scathing report by the National Association to Protect Children looked at five years of crimes against children and how Virginia courts treated those accused of the crimes. The report isn’t playing paddycake. It names names of seven Circuit Court judges in different jurisdictions whose reappointments are up for review Friday in the General Assembly. It review about 185 specific cases these judges heard. Key conclusions, according to the report: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The report notes that every agency and individual involved in these cases – social workers, police, prosecutors and judges – are responsible for the outcomes. But Grier Weeks, the executive director of the National Association to Protect Children tells CBS-6 that, in many cases, it’s up to the judges to reject a deal that he or she thinks is insufficient.

The report shows how few meaningful sentences – 10-plus years – trickle out of a system heavy with alleged crimes. Other judges were far tougher. Badass of the Week: Anthony Omari. Anthony Omari Late on the night of January 23, 2012, a 24 year-old Kenyan uber-hero named Anthony Omari awoke to find three gigantic dudes with machetes standing over his bed. He knew right away that they weren't there to sell Girl Scout cookies or ask him for a jumping mid-air high-five.

Omari is the custodian of Faraja Children's Home in Ngong, Kenya – a sanctuary of healing and love that over the past several years has grown from a tin-roofed one-room shack in the slums of Nairobi into a decent-sized facility that has taken in 37 boys and girls who have been abandoned or orphaned from the street. A place of hope and peace for children who have tragically slipped through the cracks of Kenyan society. Omari's mother, known to her charges only as "Momma", runs the Home, and, ever the diligent son, Anthony lives at the facility and helps his mom make sure that the children are provided for with a warm bed, a hot meal, a primary school education, and medical attention when they need it. Kent Bush: Police solve more crimes than Facebook - El Dorado, KS - El Dorado Times - El Dorado, KS. Man Arrested in Alleged Murder-for-Hire Plot. Michael Dunn, Fla. man, indicted for murder in fatal loud music dispute - Crimesider. (CBS/AP) JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A grand jury has indicted a 45-year-old Florida man on a first-degree murder charge in the death of a teenager following an argument over loud music coming from the teen's car. Michael David Dunn was initially charged with second-degree murder. Grand jurors also added three counts of attempted murder. Dunn is accused of the Nov. 23 shooting death of 17-year-old Jordan Davis at a Jacksonville gas station.

Officials say Dunn parked next to the vehicle where Davis was sitting with three other teens. Dunn complained about the loud music and they started arguing. Dunn told police he thought he saw a gun and fired eight or nine shots into the vehicle because he felt threatened. Dunn and his girlfriend, who was inside the gas station during the shooting, drove away from the scene, police said. Man with knife injures 22 kids at school in China. BEIJING (AP) — A knife-wielding man injured 22 children and one adult outside a primary school in central China as students were arriving for classes Friday, police said, the latest in a series of periodic rampage attacks at Chinese schools and kindergartens.

The attack in the Henan province village of Chengping happened shortly before 8 a.m., said a police officer from Guangshan county, where the village is located. The attacker, 36-year-old villager Min Yingjun, is now in police custody, said the officer, who declined to give her name, as is customary among Chinese civil servants. A Guangshan county hospital administrator said the man first attacked an elderly woman, then students, before being subdued by security guards who have been posted across China following a spate of school attacks in recent years. He said there were no deaths among the nine students admitted, although two badly injured children had been transferred to better-equipped hospitals outside the county.

Arrests Made in Maple Syrup Theft From Quebec Warehouse. 3D technology helps Berks investigators solve crimes | Regional: Berks. BERN TWP., Pa. - Berks County's Forensic Unit is reshaping the way investigators solve crimes. They're now using 3D gaming technology to reconstruct and virtually "walk-through" crime scenes. Detective Albert Schade is a forensic evidence technician for the Berks County District Attorney's Office. He is the brains behind the 3D crime scene reconstruction tool that brings measurements, blood splatter and trajectory of projectiles to life. Schade developed the program using a free online gaming software called SketchUp. "I had to find an answer to my problems. Schade worked on this tool for years. "I've had over 200 downloads of this information I'm providing for free to law enforcement through LEO which is an FBI website," said Schade.

This interactive software can even pinpoint evidence markers. "It will be something that will enhance the investigation and prosecution of a case," said Adams. The district attorney's office has used this tool in four cases so far. DNA leads police to Vanessa Pham murder suspect. “I don’t know how to feel or what it means,” said Jake Beckhard, who attended Vienna’s James Madison High School with Pham. “I want to know who this person is that killed her.” Answers to that question were still elusive Friday. Fairfax County police have offered few details about the 27-year-old suspect, what led them to him, or how and why he allegedly took the life of the college freshman in 2010. Pham was found stabbed to death in her Scion hatchback, which was found in a ditch off of Arlington Boulevard in the Falls Church area. Immigration officials disclosed Friday that Blanco-Garcia was a Guatemalan national who was in the country illegally. Tribble always maintained his innocence, and after he served his sentence, DNA tests on the hair this year excluded him as the source. In a five-page order, Judge Laura A. Cordero granted Tribble’s request for a certificate of innocence. “In light of the parties’ concession that new DNA evidence conclusively shows that the hair found in the stocking cap was not Mr. Tribble’s, the Court finds by clear and convincing evidence that he did not commit the crimes he was convicted of at trial,” Cordero wrote. With the ruling, Tribble became the second D.C. man this year and the third since 2009 to be exonerated after serving a lengthy prison term based on false hair matches by different examiners in the FBI Laboratory.

Their cases, which were featured in a series of articles in The Washington Post, helped focus national attention on flaws in the U.S. forensic science system. This summer, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick J. In addition to Tribble and Odom, Donald E. Under the D.C. Online system now in place to report crimes. Watch Radio Dead Air Episodes.
