Analysis of public maths exam papers taken by 16-year-olds between 1951 and 2006 shows standards have declined markedly, the report for Reform argues. This means more pupils have left school ill-prepared for the workplace and a generation of mathematicians has been lost to the nation's economy, it adds.
Nasjonalt senter for matematikk i opplæringen ble opprettet den 1. august 2002 og har som hovedoppgave å lede og koordinere utvikling av nye og bedre arbeidsmåter og læringsstrategier i matematikkopplæringen i barnehage, grunnskole, videregående skole, voksenopplæring og lærerutdanning i Norge. Senteret skal også bidra til et tett og godt nordisk samarbeid. Senterets målgruppe er først og fremst lærere som underviser i matematikk i skole og lærerutdanning, samt lærerstudenter ved høgskoler og universiteter, og læremiddelutviklere.

Abelprisen 2012 går til Endre Szemerédi, Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, for «for hans fundamentale bidrag til diskret matematikk og teoretisk informatikk, og som anerkjennelse for disse bidragenes gjennomgripende og varige innflytelse på additiv tallteori og ergodeteori».
