By Cathy Cuthbert Recently by Cathy Cuthbert: What's Happening to the Little People Many people are becoming aware of the need to have a preparedness plan for their families in the event of an emergency, whether it is a natural disaster or an economic one. The most obvious places to look for advice on how to prepare are the survivalist blogs and companies that have been in the business of preparedness for many years, and their advice is by far the most common we’ve seen. Despite their experience and many excellent suggestions, we have two objections to the usual advice on survival food storage offered by these sources.

The first is that these storage programs are typically devised under the assumption that your stash – all of your stash – should last you for one year or maybe even 15 years without active management. We see three problems with this assumption. Most emergencies don’t last for a year. This brings up our second objections to the standard advice – the lack of nutrient density. Vital Records - Food Storage Inventory! We are in the HOME Section of our Vital Records Binder which includes a Food Storage Inventory. Keeping track of the food we have stored can definitely be over-whelming. In and what's going out on your own is hard enough, but when you add the rest of the family to the mix a perfect system can fail in minutes. The pages I'm including in this section were created with the FAMILY in mind.

Here's How The System Works: As a family . . . take one area of your food storage at a time. On the Food Storage Inventory Sheet. Once you have listed all of the items in your food storage you will want to keep track of the quantity. Next to the item, you will see several boxes. Fill in one box for each item you have, using a highlighter. This will help you to know how many you have on hand. Put the pages into sheet protectors. Now all you have to do is put an "X" in the square and. How to dramatically increase your food storage. This is a guest post and entry in our non-fiction writing contest by Garden Mom For food storage, we have all heard the saying “Store what you eat, eat what you store.” I’m going to tweak that a bit and suggest you “store what you didn’t eat” through dehydration.

Almost everything can be dehydrated and if you dehydrate the foods you normally eat, but just didn’t get to finish, you can preserve them and eat the foods you are accustomed to later on. Dehydrated foods can last a very long time if preserved correctly, and they can be mixed in with many foods. First, you need a decent dehydrator. There are very expensive dehydrators available, but to stay within my budget I needed to spend less than $50.00. I decided on the Snackmaster from Nesco, and found it on sale for $39.99. Second, dehydrating is much easier than canning. Third, the hardest thing about dehydrating is knowing how long to leave the food in the dehydrator. Here are examples what I have dehydrated: Batch 1: Batch 2: Fruits: File.

DIY sprayer/camp shower (pic heavy) Emergency or Camping Shower » Food Storage and Survival. Here’s a great way to clean up in the woods–the Camp Shower. If you’re like me, a couple of days without a shower starts affecting my mood and there’s only so many ways to wash up in the woods most of which are a pain in the neck and use lots of water. One year while camping, there was a guy camped near us that had one of these and my crafty mother looked it over and made one for herself, then this year made one for each of her kids for Christmas.

I know, you want my mom, but you can’t have her! She’s mine! Anyway, here it is: It is made from a 2 gallon weed sprayer (only use a fresh one–you don’t need old weed killer residue in your shower) and a kitchen sink spray nozzle. My mom also has access to an industrial sewing shop and put together a nice little carry bag with shoulder strap and a mesh toiletries pack and washrag hook attached. To use the shower, heat up some water and fill up the sprayer. Recommended for you How to Make Dandelion Bread Got dandelions? Category: Food Storage - The Provident Homemaker. DryerWorkshop5-2011. It seems like every winter there are news stories of people getting stranded for weeks in bad weather while driving through the many remote areas of our country. In fact, this past winter, our nation held its breath waiting for news of James Kim and his family who got lost traveling the snowy roads of Josephine County in Oregon, not far from where this magazine is published. While his wife and daughters, who stayed with their vehicle, were eventually found alive, he succumbed to the cold as he hiked through snow looking for help for his family.

And there are also many cases of people trapped for days in their vehicles after skidding over a bridge embankment, even though they were only a few hundred feet from a busy highway. I have written many articles about how to prepare your home for a power outage or national emergency, but today I want to address how to be prepared for an emergency when traveling in your car or truck. April 18th, 2011 This time of year the pickings get slim in our freezer and basement pantry. The longer I garden and preserve food the better I get and not ending up with too much food come spring. The only things that remain in the freezer from last summer are: 4 gal. bags of wild black raspberries, 1.5 gal. bags of strawberries, 9 pints of corn, 2 cups of peas and 1 gal. bag of roasted tomatoes. Since the freezer is as empty as it will get, I defrosted it yesterday. I pulled everything out, put it in coolers and the fridge freezer, then I turned off the freezer, opened the door, lined the bottom with a bunch of towels and turned on a fan. I have a specific method for organizing my freezer. I like to keep track of what’s in the freezer so I know exactly how much of each thing I have inside without having to open the door.

We do have a lot of venison in the freezer since hunting season was in late November and Mr Chiots got three deer. Do you have a deep freezer? What Should I Be Preparing For? * WHAT SHOULD I BE PREPARING FOR? *By: NightHiker13 May 2011 "Be Prepared. " We're all familiar with the Boy Scout motto but exactly what you're supposed to be prepared for may not be all that clear. One bit of advice that helped me when I was first getting started and that I still use on a regular basis, was to conduct a Risk Analysis.

That simply means figuring out what could happen and how much of an impact on your life it will have if it does. Having done plenty of risk analysis in the military I was pretty comfortable doing it but if you've never been exposed to it then it may sound a little intimidating but it's actually not difficult at all. This list should be specific to you and your area - obviously if you live in Florida you'll have hurricanes whereas California residents would have earthquakes. Once you have your threats listed the next step is to figure out how you want to rate each event on how much trouble it would cause for you. POSSIBILITY - could this happen to me?
