Breast Cancer Initiative

The goal of the Breast Cancer Initiative is to disseminate breast cancer decision aids and evaluate the implementation of decision aids in different settings across the United States. There are five programs that cover the major decisions that women with breast cancer may face in a comprehensive and easy to understand manner. The programs feature many breast cancer survivors who talk about their experiences and how they came to select their treatment. Organizations that counsel women facing decisions about treatment of breast cancer are eligible to receive up to 10 copies of the following programs each time they make a request: DCIS: Choosing Your Treatment Early Stage Breast Cancer: Choosing Your Surgery Breast Reconstruction: Is It Right For You? Hormone Therapy and Chemotherapy: Are They Right For You? http://www.massgeneral.org/decisionsciences/research/Our_Research_BreastCancerInitiative.aspx
Cruciferous vegetables powerfully prevent breast cancer. Vitamin D powerfully protects against breast cancer. Mammograms cause some breast cancers, reduce deaths by almost the same number of deaths they cause and overall do very little to extend lives. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in North American women (heart disease is number one). In spite of modern cancer detection and treatment methods, the percentage of women dying from this common cancer has not changed much in the last thirty years. 1 http://www.drfuhrman.com/library/article20.aspx

Dan Pallotta invented the multi-day charitable event industry with the AIDS Rides and Breast Cancer 3-Days. These events altered the landscape of options for ordinary individuals seeking to make an extraordinary difference. Dan's work brought the practice of four-figure philanthropy within the reach of the average citizen who had never raised money for charity before in their lives. 182,000 people of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds participated in these inspiring, often grueling, long-distance events that raised $582 million in nine years - more money raised more quickly for these causes than any private event operation in history. Three million people donated to the events.

GRACE :: Breast Cancer

http://cancergrace.org/breast-cancer/ On July 20, 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave us another option for treating postmenopausal patients with metastatic, ER-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer whose disease has progressed on Arimidex or Femara by approving Afinitor (everolimus) in combination with Aromasin (exemestane). This new approval was based on the BOLERO-2 trial which was a randomized, double-blind, multicenter trial conducted in 724 postmenopausal women. Patients were randomized to receive either Afinitor 10 mg/day plus Aromasin 25 mg/day or to placebo plus Aromasin 25 mg/day.

Website Helps Patients Navigate Complex Medical Decisions

A new patient-friendly online resource called PREPARE has been developed to help people make complex medical decisions. The PREPARE website – developed by researchers from the UCSF-affiliated San Francisco VA Medical Center (SFVAMC), UCSF and the Veterans Health Research Institute (NCIRE) – incorporates content identified in new research to address key patient- and surrogate-identified aspects of preparing for advance care planning and decision-making. The site provides concrete examples through videos and other mechanisms on how to identify what is most important in life, how to communicate that with family and friends and doctors, and how to make informed medical decisions.
