[ edit ] Etymology The word "cigar" originated from sikar , the Yucatec Mayan word for smoking, which became cigarro in Spanish, probably from the Mayan sikar ("to smoke rolled tobacco leaves" – from sik , "tobacco;") or from the Spanish word cigarra ("grasshopper").
