Secondshell: lightweight app lets you maximize windows horizontally or vertically, adds a range of useful tweaks. Secondshell tweaks Windows and provides easy and practical shortcuts for performing a handful of tasks, such as: Maximizing windows to the edges of the screen vertically or horizontally using keyboard shortcuts (see screenshots above) and resizing or moving windows by clicking anywhere on the window, then using Alt+left click drag to move or Alt+right click drag to resize (similar to KDE Window Resizer).
Other functions include substituting the Caps Lock key for the middle mousebutton (useful for laptops or netbooks that do not have it), minimizing windows by right clicking the title bar, closing a window by middle-mouse clicking the title bar, and setting up to 10 keyboard shortcuts to launch applications. Most of what this program does we’ve seen before (for example KDE Window Resizer for Alt+resizing and FreeSnapfor maximizing to edges), but at 2 megs in memory and providing such a nice range of tweaks Secondshell is a breath of fresh air.
More details below: Version Tested: 1.07. Acer GridVista: snap your windows to pre-defined sections of your screen(s) This free app allows you to use your monitors more effectively by dividing your screen into custom sections.
It mimics the Windows 7 snap feature but goes further by allowing you to place your windows into any of two, three, or four sections on the screen through drag and drop. It also works with all versions of Windows and even works well alongside the Windows 7 snap feature (you can have both working together simultaneously). Acer GridVista supports a custom configuration for each monitor, and provides a great user experience. It also offers a handful of other functions, such as transparency and stay-on-top options. WinSuperMaximize strips the title bar from app windows. Looking for a way to conserve a few extra pixels of vertical space on your display?
You might want to give WinSuperMaximize a look. Launch the app and it minimizes to your system tray. To "super maximize," just tap win+F11 - a second press will bring the bar back. You can also right-click the tray icon to activate the effect, though sometimes it targets a window other than the currently active one. It does make moving windows a little tricky (installing AltDrag is a good way to solve that problem), and multiple monitors are not currently supported. Despite those shortcomings, it's still a decent way to save some much-needed screen real estate on cramped netbook displays. If you are using Windows XP, sometimes you might feel a little left out in the visual department. That is why we are seeing more and more applications that tweak the crap out of the Windows XP user interface.
Don’t be jealous of OS X or Compiz users anymore! Now, you can have some awesome effects and visuals as well! I downloaded the 735KB Nimi Visuals X installer from a DeviantART user and installed it. I was hoping for a free application to pretty up a desktop running Windows XP SP3 without slowing it down. After installing and accepting the user agreement, I saw a new System Tray icon which looks something like this (sorry for the blurriness, the icon had to be blown up to visualize): By double clicking or right clicking the icon, you can launch the Settings Center.
