AB InBev caught up in Wikipedia row

Portland Communications deleted the term “wife-beater” from the Wikipedia article about Stella Artois, reportedly to “challenge any connections between the brand and domestic violence.” The firm was employed by AB InBev to improve the brand’s reputation online, with it having picked up the “wife-beater” tag due to its high alcohol content and its association with town centre brawls and rowdy sports fans. Portland maintains that the changes were made openly and within Wikipedia’s rules. In the wake of this revelation, though, a meeting has been scheduled between the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and Wikipedia to give PR professionals guidance for working on Wikipedia, and to develop a code of conduct for PR professionals to help minimise attempts to mask the true identity of PR professionals seeking to edit the site.

The fault means the cider continues to ferment in the bottle leading to a build-up of gas that may cause bottles to burst. The alarm was raised after two consumers suffered minor injuries when a bottle exploded, prompting the brewer and an external laboratory to carry out tests. The FSA warned: “Do not consume or handle the product further.” Anyone who has received the products is advised to “handle the bottles carefully, wearing gloves and protective eyewear, to determine if the product is from the affected batch on an individual bottle”. In a statement, the brewer said: “A small number of 568ml Stella Artois Cidre bottles have burst and AB-InBev UK is taking the measure of recalling all the potentially affected bottles. “The potentially affected bottles come from three batches.
