art sparks art: cARTography

In Katharine Harmon's book artists take inspiration from maps, something very utilitarian in nature, and transmute these diagrammatic representations of the world into artworks. The utilitarian value of the artworks in themselves becomes far from eroded as their forms function as poignant messages, pervasive in their beauty, which is about truth. How can artworks that channel depictions of the Earth not speak of a bigger picture?

In 2002, China's Long March Project embarked upon the route of the 1934 - 1936 historic 6000-mile Long March. Beijing-based artist, Qin Ga, tracked the group’s route in a tattooed map on his back. Memory Box, a community outreach programme initiated by the University of Cape Town, worked with HIV+ people to encourage expression and contemplation of their experience through writing, painting and other media. I let my laundry pile grow to the point of embarrassment - it's really pathetic. I don't even have to do my own laundry; we drop it off at a laundromat that charges by the pound.

On this particular evening, I had the pleasure of bringing Bobby's boss's daughter, Grace, to her first show at Lincoln Center. P.s. Editor's Musings. Isaac Likes. Honestly WTF. Brooklyn based artist Sophie Blackall‘s Missed Connections project is an ongoing series based on real messages posted online by lovelorn strangers.

Honestly WTF

I could spend the entire day reading these anonymous postings through the eyes of Sophie’s Chinese ink and water color illustrations. Some are sweet, some are funny and some are sad, but mostly they are hopeful . . . and make us hopeful for someone’s second chance at love! When designing each handbag collection, Barbara Bonner keeps in mind the archetypical strong woman who inspires her. Her influencial grandmother, for instance, was a traveling circus performer who rode a motorcycle in the circle of death . When I first discovered the London based designer, I immediately wanted to get my hands on one of her ultra long fringed bags. I absolutely love the idea of a daring set of mismatched chairs around a dining table. A dog is a man’s best friend. A Beautiful Mess. I love using cloth napkins to dress up our dinner table, and through the years I've grown even more fond of their sustainability and cost effectiveness.

A Beautiful Mess

Though, I'm not sure how cost effective it is if you keep buying more and more cloth napkins each year! This holiday season I thought it would be fun to look at how I could dress up the napkins I already own to give them an extra festive vibe. Check out three simple ways you can give new life to your table linens. And hey! Two of them are even no sew! Ribbon Trimmed Napkin This look is so (no sew) simple! Supplies:-ribbon-heat bond in width of ribbon-cloth napkin (buy mine here)-iron-fabric scissors (not shown above) Step One: Trim pieces of your ribbon to be about 1.5 inches longer than the width of your napkins.
