The cost of corporate ecocide is greater than the national economies of all but seven countries … by Juliette JowitGuardian, Feb. 18, 2010 The cost of pollution and other damage to the natural environment caused by the world’s biggest companies would wipe out more than one-third of their profits if they were held financially accountable, a major unpublished study for the United Nations has found The report comes amid growing concern that no one is made to pay for most of the use, loss and damage of the environment, which is reaching crisis proportions in the form of pollution and the rapid loss of freshwater, fisheries and fertile soils.
Later this year, another huge UN study – dubbed the “Stern for nature” after the influential report on the economics of climate change by Sir Nicholas Stern – will attempt to put a price on such global environmental damage, and suggest ways to prevent it. London Permaculture Network. Transformation. There is now irrefutable evidence and agreement that human progress must be decoupled from resource use and environmental deterioration.
However, despite immense efforts to achieve the Green Economy, in which companies will supply the demands of all people within the renewable capacity of the Earth, this economic paradigm remains remarkably elusive. The most significant reason is that major environmental externalities still dominate the global economy. Despite improvements in intensity, the absolute impacts of business activity on the Earth’s natural processes and ecosystems continue practically unabated. Whilst voluntary, bottom up and consumer led solutions are locally effective, they are not solving the environmental issues that threaten the stability of the Earth system. Therefore, the Green Economy will only become the dominant economic paradigm when the distortions caused by major environmental externalities are removed.
