The Shoulder Armor

John Hart , one of the artists who worked on the original movie armor oh-so-long ago, dropped us a line and gave us some tips about the creation of the armor. "The original concept was fossilized armor, steel fused with bone, with the color scheme black and rust with a little bit of shine here and there. " Our shoulder armor was constructed from 1/8 inch thick sheets of plastic. We drew a template of the armor onto the flat plastic, heated the plastic slowly over a stove-top heating element and curved the plastic to the desired shape. That's the easy way to say it. The templates were created first in thick construction paper, sized up to the wearer for proper fitting, and then traced onto the plastic. Each shoulder armor is a different size and shape. I was searching for a cheap, light, but nice-looking material to make armor out of, and I discovered one - craft foam!

Craft Foam Armor Tutorial

This tutorial is designed to show what you can create using only materials that are widely available at general craft stores, with no need for specialty shops or internet orders. I specifically used it for Helm's Deep elf armor, but it could be used for almost any armor that you can break down into fairly flat pieces. The method listed below is what I've come up with, but there really is no one right way to use craft foam; check the end of the tutorial for links to other foam armor sites. For an example of a finished project, here's a picture of my elven armor.

Advantages: Light weight Inexpensive materials Widely available materials Easy to make Safe to wear in crowds Most steps are safe for kids to do Flexible - won't break or crack Great 'beginner' armor Disadvantages: The tools you will need are: Scissors Paintbrush Heat source - heat gun or stove burner. Big Daddy (Bioshock) I finally lost my mind enough to try to tackle one of these big guys.

Big Daddy (Bioshock)

For those unfamiliar, Big Daddys are the protectors of the Little Sisters in Rapture, an underwater city devoid of morality which has degenerated into chaos and insanity. They are huge, fast, strong, and as it turns out, a solid pain in the ass to build. I'm going to break with tradition for a sec, and show you the finished product first. This is a long, long, long post that details nearly 7 solid weeks of work, and you guys deserve to know that the long post is quite necessary, and (I think) well worth the read. Like everyone else who had a passing fancy with gaming, I recently fell very deeply into Bethesda’s most recent Elder Scrolls offering: Skyrim.

Skyrim Female Ancient Nord Helmet

For anyone who hasn’t played the game, there’s a wealth of beautiful armor and weaponry. Its the sort of thing where a builder like me wanders around the map saying “I want to make that. And that. And three of those.” The item I found most striking, and the one I chose to build first, was the Ancient Nord Helmet (also called the Draugr helmet.) If you played a male character in Skyrim, this helmet may seem odd to you; the female variant got these awesome antlers, the men had the ram horns. I started out with some very nice 3D files ripped from the game, courtesy of a gent who follows my Facebook page and was kind enough to lend a hand with the source imagery. Skyrim: Dragonborn Helmet and Costume Tutorial

Today's post is going to be a tutorial on how I made my Skyrim Dragonborn helmet, plus some pointers and pictures on how I made the rest of the costume. Now, I am a horrible procrastinator when it comes to me making costumes for conventions. I am usually the entire night before it is suppose to be ready lol. This can be a blessing and a curse! On one side, I learn to make costumes relatively quickly. Between work, school, and having my personal free time, the helmet took about 6 days to complete.
