The National Trust for Scotland – Gardens. Welcome to Gardens The National Trust for Scotland cares for just under 70 gardens and designed landscapes, 35 of which are classified as major gardens whilst the remainder are smaller gardens associated with museum properties or amenity landscape sites. Almost every style of Scottish garden history is represented - from late medieval to modern creations in older settings. With more than 283 hectares under intensive cultivation, supporting over 13,500 different taxa (species and cultivars) of plants, our gardens are internationally renowned for their historical and horticultural significance. Geographical and climatic diversity, such as the effects of the North Atlantic Drift or Gulf Stream's effect on west coast gardens, provides favourable conditions for the growth of remarkable, and often unique, collections of plants.

Inverewe Garden & Estate. A lush, sub-tropical-style, oasis perched on a peninsula at the edge of Loch Ewe amid the rugged landscape of Wester Ross, this world-famous historic garden is one of Scotland’s most popular botanical attractions. It is surrounded by an extensive estate managed for conservation. The spectacular vistas on the journey from Inverness to Inverewe is one of the most spectacular in Scotland, making a visit even more worthwhile. The garden was created out of bare rock and a few scrub willows in 1862 by Osgood Mackenzie and is full of colourful, exotic plants from around the world.

Highlights include the most northerly planting of rare Wollemi pines, Himalayan blue poppies, olearia from New Zealand, Tasmanian eucalypts, and rhododendrons from China, Nepal and the Indian subcontinent. These plants flourish here, despite the northerly latitude, thanks to the warm currents of the Gulf Stream and the foresight of Osgood Mackenzie, who planted over 100 acres of woodland to shelter the garden.
