Inverewe Garden & Estate. A lush, sub-tropical-style, oasis perched on a peninsula at the edge of Loch Ewe amid the rugged landscape of Wester Ross, this world-famous historic garden is one of Scotland’s most popular botanical attractions.

Inverewe Garden & Estate

It is surrounded by an extensive estate managed for conservation. The spectacular vistas on the journey from Inverness to Inverewe is one of the most spectacular in Scotland, making a visit even more worthwhile. The garden was created out of bare rock and a few scrub willows in 1862 by Osgood Mackenzie and is full of colourful, exotic plants from around the world. Highlights include the most northerly planting of rare Wollemi pines, Himalayan blue poppies, olearia from New Zealand, Tasmanian eucalypts, and rhododendrons from China, Nepal and the Indian subcontinent. A couple of miles north of Tarbert on the main road that runs the length of Harris is a junction signposted west to Huisinis on the B887.

If you have the time, this single track road is your gateway to one of the most glorious 15 miles of scenery anywhere in Scotland. The road first passes through the scattered settlement Bunabhainneadar with the brick tower of the whaling station on the shore below. Prominent in views to the south is the island of Taransay, abandoned as unsustainable by its remaining population in 1942. More recently it achieved fame as home in 2000 to a group of people as part of the TV programme "Castaway". The next surprise en route to Huisinis is the biggest. Journey's end, for most, is the car park at the east end of the stunning white beach at Huisinis. Scarp is now best known for a failed attempt to improve the poor inter-island communications that contributed to its demise.

The Small Isles

It is dominated by the 393 m (1,289 feet) peak of An Sgurr (the rocky peak), a dramatic pitchstone ridge, the largest of its kind in Europe, clearly visible and recognisable from the mainland. Eigg boasts the first completely wind, water and sun-powered electricity grid in the world, due to the pioneering community on the island who are continually aiming to reduce their carbon footprint. A macabre story relates the meaning behind the name of one of the caves on Eigg’s south coast - the Massacre Cave. The following spring they did just that. Isle of Eigg Looking to Rum The MacLeods searched the island for two days, with no success. Ruthlessly, they piled thatch and roof timbers at the cave entrance and set fire to it, damping the flames so that the cave was filled with smoke.
