Is a wonderful online magazine filled with essays, crafts, gift guides and fun ideas for parents. I highly recommend it. The theme for this issue is Science, and I created a Monarch butterfly chrysalis craft, inspired by Not Martha’s tiny pinatas and an experience I had with Monarchs at work last year: The Foundation that I work for gives money to a group called the Monarch Teacher Network, which is a network of teachers who use the incredible migration of the Monarch butterfly as a robust teaching tool in their classrooms (environmental lessons, math lessons, art lessons, etc). It starts off as light green with tiny gold dots on it, and as the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, the chrysalis gets increasingly translucent so that you can actually see the black and orange wings: Like this: Like Loading...

I used to blog quite a bit about music discovery apps but then Spotify came along, I moved from the BBC's Audio & Music Interactive department (to its television equivalent) and general app fatigue set in... Then, a couple of week's ago, online streaming service thesixtyone released its Aweditorium iPad app and I was shaken out of my music discovery lethargy by an app of such elegance and utility that it's become almost a constant companion, introducing another ambient screen into my life (but hopefully not forcing me to buy another iPad... ;) Like many of the best interfaces, none of its paradigms are particularly new or revolutionary - it just assembles existing paradigms with such grace that it feels fresh and delightful, displaying a number of those small but significant interface touches that I've banged on about in the past.

I thought you might enjoy seeing some of these vintage fashion photos as much as I did. Most of the photos were taken in the 1950's, and so many of the styles could easily be worn today. Some might need a little updating here or there, but the majority of them are still just as feminine, lovely, and classic as they were back then. I had so much fun browsing through them! Friday Flowers: Hair Barrette Necklaces. Why should little girls have all the fun? Big girls can wear hair flair too! No pigtails required :) Last time I went scouring for art supplies at the beauty supply store I unearthed these wonderful plastic flower hair barrettes for a buck a box! Cute huh? Just clip them on an oversize chain necklace and add a few accent beads. And the fun goes way beyond flowers. In their usual place, hair bows make everyone's head look happy. To make one of these ribbon chain necklaces, you will want: A bunch of hair barrettes (I used 15, choose your length as you wish)A bunch of 2” ribbon pieces tied into knots I like pairing the bright shiny plastic with some dull, vintage bias tape, but that's just me.
Instructions Good thing these pictures can do the talking. The essential concept is this: the ribbon knot goes through the hole of one barrette back piece AND THEN slips over the hole of another barrette back piece.
