Beef Rendang - My Mother's Recipe. When we were little my mother worked part time as a teacher. Every day she would wait for the phone call in the morning that would tell her if she was going off to work or not. If the phone rang it meant that we had to stay at a babysitters for the afternoon until our father picked us up. We’d sigh and groan if we heard the familiar clanging of the phone.

Our child sitter was a strange woman who my sister and I didn’t really like but as children we were momentarily bribed by the fact that she let us have crackers with peanut butter and jam after school. My mother didn’t really have time for much cooking. One day she made a dish and it was really good. This beef rendang is one of the many repertoire of dishes that have come to furnish her recipe folder over the last couple of decades.

Tarragon soda was invented by Mitrofan Lagidze in Tbilisi in 1887, and I already talked about Lagidze’s beverages here, in another post. But it wasn’t until 1981 that Soviet Union started mass production and gave Tarkhun (whose name is derived from the word for tarragon in Georgian and other languages from around the Caucasus) its distinctive color by adding malachite green, a dye that is now considered toxic and banned in most countries.

Don’t worry though, my recipe’s entirely safe and natural! As surprising as the idea may first sound, Tarkhun is actually quite good and carries tarragon’s pleasant, mildly liquorice flavor. There are 2 challenges in making perfect Tarkhun: Color. Recipe for Quinoa Side Dish with Pine Nuts, Green Onions, and Cilantro. How do you feel about quinoa? It's something I was slow to warm up to, and for a long time I didn't think I'd ever be much of a quinoa fan. Then last summer I made Quinoa Salad with Avocado, Radishes, Cucumbers, and Cumin-Lime Vinaigrette, followed by Quinoa Tabbouleh Salad, and I was surprised to discover how much I liked it.

This Quinoa Side Dish with Pine Nuts, Green Onions, and Cilantro may be my favorite quinoa recipe yet. The quinoa is sauteed in oil for a few minutes before it's cooked in chicken or vegetable stock, and then a generous amount of toasted pine nuts and chopped green onion and a little chopped cilantro is stirred in before it's eaten warm. Most quinoa has to be rinsed to remove a natural coating called saponin. Heat the oil in a heavy pot with a tight-fitting lid, add the rinsed quinoa and saute for 3-4 minutes, or until the quinoa starts to smell slightly toasted.

Add the chicken or vegetable stock (it will sputter a little). South Beach Suggestions: 2 Minute Chocolate and Salted Caramel Mug Cake. Did you see our 10 TASTY MUG CAKES IN MINUTES? Pickled bamboo. Pickled Bamboo Shoots Recipe from Jennifer Lee. How To Pickle Bamboo Shoots! Tonic syrup | Honest Kitchen. Summertime always brings with it a few sure things – as much time as possible on a picnic blanket in the park; going berry picking; long, warm, cardigan-free evenings spent with friends; the noisy chirps of the crickets outside the window; and lots of refreshing drinks. One of my favourite summer drinks (and really, I drink them all year round) is the good old gin and tonic. Tonic water is something that I really do not enjoy on its own, but when mixed with gin something magical happens. My parents taught me to mix a gin and tonic (and a Tom Collins) from quite a long age, and when I started drinking many years later and graduated from the years of Passion Pop and coconut rum, the gin and tonic was quickly adopted as one of my favourite tipples.

As proud owners of a soda stream, I recently starting thinking about how we might be able to make tonic water at home. Tonic syrup Adapted from the New York Times and Jeffrey Morgenthaler Makes approximately 5 cups Ingredients Method. Urban Farmer: Tonic Water. I've never given much thought to tonic water and how it's made. I had always assumed that in some sweatshop somewhere, small children filled bottles with tonic water and packed them into crates, ready for them to be sent in my direction to accompany my gin. For anti-malarial purposes of course. But I recently learned that the bitterness in tonic was quinine (ok, I knew that part) and the quinine was derived from the Peruvian bark of the Cinchona plant. The part that piqued my interest was that cinchona was almost impossible to come by in Australia, so obviously I had to make it myself, and put those greedy sweatshop children out of a job.

Finding a recipe was easy. I could bore you with the details of how I tracked the cinchona bark down, but long story short, I was able to get it from Newtons Parmacy in Sydney. So now on to the making the tonic water. Combine all the ingredients except the sugar and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer with the lid on for 20 minutes. How to make Tonic Water | Summit Sips. I was never a Gin & Tonic fan, but all of that changed last year when I read Jeffrey Morgenthaler's post about making tonic from scratch. Of course, his wasn't the first recipe to gain widespread attention. The resurgence of craft tonic is credited to Kevin Ludwig of Portland, Oregon whose recipe even appeared in the March/April 2007 issue of Imbibe Magazine. Having basically skipped over that recipe back then, I considered it an ingredient best left to gin drinkers, or someone who was more interested. Finally, after reading more about it and seeing craft tonic added to a cocktail I really enjoyed, I decided to give it a try.

Why make something that already exists? When I first saw the Imbibe article, I was asking myself all sorts of questions. The Bitter Truth About Tonic Water Think about the name, tonic, for a moment and you conjure up images of old-time pharmacies or even bearded swindlers selling bottles of secret sauce as a medicinal cure-all.
