I’ve been using some add-ons for FireFox that enable me to investigate semantic mark-upon any given page if there is any on there. It’s good because it means I can begin to see which sites are all out on Semantic web and which ones aren’t yet. I’m definitely seeing a move towards more of that kind of data though. I thought I’d share with you some of the extensions that I either use now or have used in the past which I found to be useful. - Semantic Radar : Displays a status bar icon to indicate presence of Semantic Web data in the web page.

data.gov.uk was finally launched to the public last week (still in beta, but now a more public beta than the beta that it’s been in for the last few months). It’s a great step forward, and everyone involved should be proud of both the amount of data that’s been made available and the website itself, which ( unlike a lot of UK government IT ) was developed rapidly by a small team based on open source software (and at low cost). This is a first step on a long road.

One of the goals of the government’s Data Project is to equip the people who own data with the capability to publish it as linked data. There’s an overwhelming amount of work to do here from providing tool support to changing a culture that makes it hard to publish data. But we can start by taking some baby steps that simply explain what’s involved in turning existing data into linked data. C’est sans doute le temps particulièrement pluvieux qui favorise cette éclosion de nouvelles applications toutes plus sympathiques les unes que les autres à la frontière du social et du sémantique. Le Web social a besoin d’une couche sémantique, et le Web sémantique doit absolument pour être crédible, investir le Web social. Les applications innovantes se précipitent donc dans ce nouvel espace à défricher, qui n’est peut-être pas encore tout à fait un marché, mais où les choses bougent très vite. Nous avons déjà parlé de Twine , qui fait déjà figure d’ancienne. « Twiner » depuis bientôt deux mois, j’y reste comme beaucoup d’utilisateurs avec une impression mitigée. Interface peu intuitive, beaucoup de fonctionnalités qui existent ailleurs et qu’on s’attendait à retrouver « par défaut » dans cette « première application du Web 3.0″. Il semble que l’équipe de Radar Networks ait conçu un projet très ambitieux, mais dont elle aura du mal à cerner les limites fonctionnelles.

Bien sûr, parce qu’on va les tenir dans nos mains, parce qu’ils vont bouger sous nos yeux, ces changements-là seront spectaculaires. Pourtant, demain, il n’y a pas que les objets qui seront intelligents : il y aura aussi les données. Et l’impact de ce changement pourrait bien être tout aussi radical.

In the past few postings, I presented some of the problems in managing information for corporate products and services using legacy authoring and publishing processes combined with new Web 2.0 communication practices. Take a look at these postings to get a clear view of where I’m coming from: Shotgun Communication : Haphazard information distribution from disparate and insulated teams within an organization makes it hard for the customer to find usable knowledge. Knowledge from the Cloud : The pros and cons of online information that questions information sources and their veracity. Not all information is created or maintained equally.This exercise utilizes information from a government spending website, USASpending.gov along with some resources from OEGov to produce a simple application that displays government spending, organized by line of business for that spending and government agency. The instructor will walk you through the steps; this is a group activity. If you are an experienced user of TopBraid Composer you might be able to follow the instuctions on your own, but these are not intended to be complete without additional guidance from the instructor. You will need web connectivity to carry out the full exercise. The process exploits many of the concepts outlined in this tutorial:
