Posted: Saturday, March 16, 2013 12:00 am Iowa School for the Deaf junior wins state Poetry Out Loud competition By Ashlee Coffey acoffey@nonpareilonline.com Southwest Iowa Newspapers | Dakota Meyer, a junior at Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD) in Council Bluffs, was named the winner of the 2013 Poetry Out Loud Iowa state competition March 3 at the State Historical Museum of Iowa in Des Moines.
The win earned Meyer $200 and $500 for ISD to purchase poetry books. Meyer will now head to Washington, D.C., in April to compete in the Poetry Out Loud National Finals, where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be awarded. Meyer will be the second deaf student to compete in the national contest.
