Projects:prosthetic_instruments [Input Devices and Music Interaction Laboratory (IDMIL)]

These instruments are the culmination of a three-year long project in which the designers worked closely with dancers, musicians, composers and a choreographer.

The goal of the project was to develop instruments that are visually striking, utilize advanced sensing technologies, and are rugged enough for extensive use in performance. The complex, transparent shapes are lit from within, and include articulated spines, curved visors and ribcages. Unlike most computer music control interfaces, they function both as hand-held, manipulable controllers and as wearable, movement-tracking extensions to the body. Further, since the performers can smoothly attach and detach the objects, these new instruments deliberately blur the line between the performers' bodies and the instrument being played. The prosthetic instruments were designed and developed by Ph.D. researchers Joseph Malloch and Ian Hattwick under the supervision of IDMIL director Marcelo Wanderley. Theometrica - Generative sound synthesis instrument inspired by acupuncture. Created by Osacr Palou & Alexander Müller-Rakow at the UdK, Theometrica is a sound interface that explores the relation of ethnologic, geometric graphics and generative sound synthesis.

Theometrica - Generative sound synthesis instrument inspired by acupuncture

Inspired by acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine technique based on the insertion and manipulation of needles, this sculptural instrument is designed to control sound elements in real time by fixing specific pins into a spinning disk. Furthermore, its interface design represents an active space where geometrical constellations are being decoded into sound events. The development of this prototype starts a research process which aims to explore the correlation between geometry, probability and synthesis sound generation, with a focus in performance.

The installation is comprised of 99 prepared needles, distance sensor and software using Max/MSP. Fine collection of curious sounds. Palette. TMA-1 X Headphone. Palette modular controller adds dials and switches to your computer. Whether it's a touchscreen, keyboard, or mouse, there are plenty of ways to interact with your computer, but sometimes you need something a little more tactile.

Palette modular controller adds dials and switches to your computer

Enter Palette, described as a "freeform hardware interface," that lets you create a custom controller with a variety of switches, dials, and buttons. It works with Mac, Windows, and Linux devices, and the creators say that they're working to support a variety of software right away, including Photoshop and Traktor. Each module also comes with built-in LED lights so you can work late into the night. All of the pieces come in the form of tiny blocks and you can arrange them however you like, sticking them together like LEGO blocks.
