Available on amazon UK and USA A book about the visual identity of some of the world's main terrorist organizations wasn't going to remain unnoticed. When it was published by MERRELL last year, every single design blog and magazine wrote about it. Yet, i only discovered the existence of Branding Terror last month, when i had a ridiculously great time at the Graphic Design Festival in Breda (NL.) In a similar way to what happens with consumer goods, the name, slogans, and visual codes of a terrorist group are not only key manifestations of its identity, they also contribute to the reach and influence of the organization.
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Terrorist mask series #8: IRA (via Branding Terror facebook page) The book is authored by graphic designer and creative director Francesco Trivini Bellini and by writer and (ex)counter-terrorism analyst Artur Beifuss. Hi Artur! RAF logo. Science Fiction: New Death. Science Fiction: New Death seeks to provoke the question - have the Sci Fi visions we once imagined of the future since become a reality? I guess we all know the answer to that one. Portfolio. 2014: Xu Zhen - The Armory Show.
Xu Zhen (b. 1977, Shanghai) was chosen as the commissioned artist for The Armory Show 2014. A “chameleon of concept," he has built an extensive body of work that includes video, installation, performance, and photography. From theatrical merry pranks to quieter works playing on human sensitivity, Xu Zhen has developed a repertoire confronting social-political taboos within the context of contemporary China and beyond. For this edition of The Armory Show, Xu Zhen placed his mark on key aspects of the fair’s look and feel. Paintings from his Under Heaven series, in which a pastry chef’s icing applicator is used to apply pigment to a temptingly delicious impasto, graced Armory Show collateral in the months leading up to the fair and on-site.
These paintings, their title both a literal translation of a Chinese word meaning “the whole world" and a joking reference to Jeff Koons’s infamous Made In Heaven series, give the sense of an ambition to "have one’s cake and eat it too. But of course worth the trip, worth the time, and worth the investment for collectors. The Armory Show is full of enthralling things, from the 20th century modern works on Pier 92, to the contemporary works on Pier 94. This year’s focus is on China, which includes a section of the fair for galleries specializing in contemporary Chinese works; a two day China Symposium, March 8 and 9; and the Armory Artist Commission granted to “chameleon of concept” Xu Zhen. And of course the week kicks off with the always fabulous opening party hosted by the Museum of Modern Art. The Drawings of Laurie Lipton, published by Last Gasp, is a comprehensive survey of Lipton’s fantastical, meticulously detailed, hand-drawn images. Gallery below is NSFW When traveling around Europe as a student, she began developing her very own peculiar drawing technique building up tone with thousands of fine cross-hatching lines like an egg tempera painting. “It’s an insane way to draw,” she says, “but the resulting detail and luminosity is worth the amount of effort. My drawings take longer to create than a painting of equal size and detail.”

Morphs, the architectural creatures that behave like slime mould. A few weeks ago, i went to the graduation show of the Interactive Architecture Studio - Research Cluster 3 at the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL. The unit, headed by Ruairi Glynn and Ollie Palmer, focuses on kinetic and interactive design looking at the latest robotics, material and responsive systems while at the same time borrowing from a long history of performative machines and performing arts.
As you can guess, i was quite enthusiastic about many of the works developed over this one-year postgraduate course. One of the most interesting for me was William Bondin's research project which explores the gap between digital simulation and physical prototyping in the performance of dynamic architectural systems. Bondin's proposal involves a colony of self autonomous creature-like structures, called Morphs, which very slowly navigate public parks. Their moves are not just dictated by a set of pre-programmed rules, they also rely on their physical and social environment. Hi William! 1: 1989 Beijing | Iconic War Photography, With All The People Erased. If I say "Tiananmen Square," what pops into your head? Probably the iconic image of a protester standing in front of a column of tanks.
Even if you don’t know anything about the circumstances surrounding it, you know the photograph. You’d recognize it anywhere. But what if it didn’t have the protester? Or the tanks? Would you recognize it then? And would it still mean anything to you? Pavel Smejkal explores all those questions in a series called Fatescapes. But Smejkal isn’t interested in the actual events so much as the photographs which have come to represent them. Or did they? Smejkal ends the series with a much more recent photograph--one of the infamous digicam shots of the prisoners at Abu Ghraib. See more of Smejkal’s work here. Construction of Christo’s “Big Air Package” at the Gasometer Oberhausen, Germany. February 2013. (all photographs unless indicated by Wolfgang Volz & courtesy Christo) Christo’s latest project, an awe-inspiring installation in an industrial relic in Germany, looks more like a captured dirigible than much of the previous fabric-based work he’s created with his late wife Jeanne-Claude. In fact, a balloon-building company was involved in engineering the “Big Air Package,” a towering installation recently constructed in the Gasometer in Oberhausen.
Wolfgang Volz, a longtime collaborator and photographer for Christo and Jeanne-Claude and the Project Manager for the “Big Air Package,” explained over email the engineering challenges of the installation, for which they worked with balloon company GEO – Die Luftwerker. ”They had great experience in building large inflatable skins even though they had never build anything of this size,” he wrote.
