Timelapse of the Imperceptible Effects of Aging Created from Family Portraits by Anthony Cerniello. Editor’s note: Watch the whole thing. With sound. Don’t skip around. Just let it play, or else you’re missing out. Aging is fascinating thing to document in film and photography, from Noah Kalina’s 12+ year portrait a day project to Diego Goldberg’s family portrait series that began in 1976, it’s interesting to see how many different approaches there are. Last Thanksgiving, Cerniello traveled to his friend Danielle’s family reunion and with still photographer Keith Sirchio shot portraits of her youngest cousins through to her oldest relatives with a Hasselblad medium format camera.

The final result is pretty remarkable, if a little bizarre. I wanted to make a person, I felt like I could tell a story with that, but it ended up feeling slightly robotic, like an android. Cerniello normally edits commercials and music videos for the likes of 30 Seconds to Mars and Kings of Leon, you can see much more of his work over on his website.

Some mysteries never dim with time. One of them is hanging from an electrical wire in Livermore. At Livermore Fire Station No. 6 is a lightbulb that has not burned out in 110 years.

Nobody, even in this golden age of technology, knows why. And no one wants to unscrew the bulb to find out. "It still gives that warm, comfy glow," said retired Livermore fire Division Chief Lynn Owens. "In this transient modern world, this lightbulb is really something you can trust. The lightbulb is about 3 inches long and slightly rounder than a modern lightbulb. Its workings may be a mystery, but it's probably the most well-documented lightbulb in history.

At the time, lightbulbs - at least practical ones that lasted more than 12 hours - had been around for only about 20 years. Between 1901 and 1903, the then-60-watt bulb was moved to a firehouse on Second Street, and then to a new station on First and McLeod streets. For the next 71 years, the bulb languished in anonymity. The Ironic Success Of Experimental Philosophy : 13.7: Cosmos And Culture. iStockphoto.com Later this week, hundreds of philosophers will converge near San Francisco's Union Square for the 87th annual meeting of the Pacific Division of the American Philosophical Association. Reporters from The San Francisco Chronicle will not be onsite to cover the invited symposia on the epistemology of modality or on the semantics and pragmatics of pejoratives. Local news stations will not record the sessions on Plato or on consciousness. The New York Times will not run a feature on the latest arguments concerning moral realism, reproduction and bioethics, war and global justice or the problem of animal pain. Let's face it: philosophy rarely makes the news. What is experimental philosophy? To illustrate, consider one of the most celebrated findings from experimental philosophy: the "side-effect effect" or Knobe effect, named after experimental philosophy icon Joshua Knobe, who first documented the phenomenon.

But why would this be? 9 year old discusses the meaning of life and the universe. Isaac Chotiner: The Curse Of Knowledge: A Review Of Jonah Lehrer's "Imagine: How Creativity Works" Lehrer does not see creativity or imagination as being intricately connected to art, or to science, or to anything that we would generally term “imaginative.” It is all about success. Dylan writes successful song lyrics, and Barbie dolls sell. A Nike executive is reminded of Gary Gilmore’s famous alleged last words, and is thus able to coin the slogan “Just Do It.”

Lehrer’s unwillingness to distinguish between these types of thinking, between art, science, and commerce, is discouraging. Inside or outside, the only place that finally interests Lehrer is the marketplace. Thus, he discusses the creative culture at Pixar in an attempt to explain why the company has been so successful. THE SECOND HALF of Lehrer’s book is even more perfunctory. Sadhu. Two sadhus near Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu, Nepal. A sadhu in Kathmandu, Nepal. Naga sadhu in Pashupatinath temple, Nepal Sadhu in Pashupatinath Etymology[edit] The Sanskrit terms sādhu ("good man") and sādhvī ("good woman") refer to renouncers who have chosen to live a life apart from or on the edges of society to focus on their own spiritual practice.[3] The words come from the Sanskrit root sādh, which means "reach one's goal", "make straight", or "gain power over".[4] The same root is used in the word sādhana, which means "spiritual practice". 'Sadhu' can also be used as Vidhyartha, meaning 'let good happen'.

Sadhu rituals[edit] Sadhus are sanyasi, or renunciates, who have left behind all material attachments and live in caves, forests and temples all over India and Nepal. A sadhu is usually referred to as Baba by common people. There are 4 to 5 million sadhus in India today and they are widely respected for their holiness,[5] and sometimes feared for their curses.

Now blogs are the bush telegraph of the movement, where the thinking and arguing and reporting goes on. As is the way with blogs, most link through to most of the others, so jump in anywhere and move around. This site can't pretend to offer a full list of alt-worship/emerging church blogs, but most of the major ones are here, and you can reach the rest through them. abbotsford.org.uk | A wee congregation in Clydebank, Scotland.
