English - What is MATER-BI® What’s Mater-Bi® Under the brand name Mater-Bi® Novamont produces and markets a broad family of innovative bioplastics obtained thanks to proprietary technologies in the field of starch, cellulose, vegetable oils and their combinations. Bioplastics are materials whose properties and characteristics of use are very similar to those of traditional plastics, but at the same time, they are biodegradable and compostable according to the European standard UNI EN 13432, the most important reference for the technical material manufacturers, public authorities, composters, certifiers and consumers. Due to the characteristics of biodegradability and compostability, Mater-Bi® products allow to optimize waste collection and management, to reduce environmental impact and to contribute to the development of virtuous systems with significant advantages along all the production-consumption-disposal cycle.
Characteristics Mater-Bi® biopolymers can be classified according different typologies or “grades”. TPU. TPU - Thermoplastic Polyurethanes and Renewable TPU for injection moulding (ear tags, seals, etc.), Tpu for adhesives (Tpu dispersions for adhesives and Solvent free tpu), for extrusion (tubes, hoses, belts, etc.), Tpu for calendering, and. Tpu elastomers. Thermoplastic polyurethanes. Chemistry[edit] TPU are formed by the reaction of: (1) diisocyanates with short-chain diols (so-called chain extenders) and (2) diisocyanates with long-chain diols. The practically unlimited amount of possible combinations producible by varying the structure and/or molecular weight of the three reaction compounds allows for an enormous variety of different TPU.
This allows urethane chemists to fine-tune the polymer’s structure to the desired final properties of the material. Morphology[edit] The polarity of the hard pieces creates a strong attraction between them, which causes a high degree of aggregation and order in this phase, forming crystalline or pseudo crystalline areas located in a soft and flexible matrix. These "pseudo crosslinks", however, disappear under the effect of heat, and thus the classical extrusion, injection moulding and calendering processing methods are applicable to these materials. By Charlotte Eyre Posted 8 June 2009 Italian supermarket Unicoop is teaming up with Novamont to manufacture bags out of the biopolymer producer’s Mater-Bio, a starch-based resin. Novamont spokesperson Sabina Lenaz told European Plastics News that the Mater-bio bag, which is 100% compostable and takes only one to three months to biodegrade in landfill, will be used to replace all of Unicoop’s 50m carrier bags in shops throughout Florence, one of Italy’s largest cities.
Lenaz says the bags are manufactured by Italian firm IPU and are compostable according to the EN 13432 standard. “[The material] thus completes a virtuous circle: raw materials of agricultural origin are returned to the soil by way of biodegrading and composting processes without pollutants,” says Novamont. Unicoop officially launched its Mater-Bio bags in May as part of a project to promote sustainability entitled ‘Diamo una mano all’ambiente’ (Let’s lend a hand to the environment).
