Our Vietnam adventure began and ended in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC)/Saigon. HCMC’s international airport is clean & modern, and honestly, not the worst I’ve seen. If you need a visa to enter Vietnam, your wait might take a little while though. SGD0.30 will put you on a clean, air-conditioned bus (#152) from the airport to central HCMC. Our hostel ‘My My Art House’ along with tonnes of other hostels is located in the main backpacker’s district at Phan Ngu Lao.
‘My My Art House’ is admittedly a little bit difficult to find. A picture of our twin room & the toilet- simple and clean. A note of caution if you are a shower/hygiene freak like me, the water supply for the bath rooms come from a water tank, so if many guests are using the shower at the same time, you run the risk of running out of hot water, if any even flow out of the tap.

Le Pho is located deep in the heart of Little India – Castleridge Mall. A bit out of place amongst all the East Indian eateries, it caught my eye when i was on my way to Bombay Sweet House. For what it’s worth, the decor at Le Pho was clean, and dated. We ordered three standard tasting dishes, goi cuon (salad rolls), a bowl of pho sate, and a bowl of bun thit nuong.

Before Vietnamese sandwich shops became so ubiquitous, there were specific places I'd always go. Well, I still do but I hadn't visited this location in a while.
When I used to work in Orange County, whenever cousin Q came home from college, his mom would give me $3 and ask that I buy him sandwiches on my way home. Buy 2, get 1 free on sandwiches and desserts. So three Vietnamese sandwiches were only $3. I'd end up buying a set for me too and often gave one to whichever homeless person was waiting in front. I was always amused that white homeless men chose to park themselves in front of this very Vietnamese strip mall in the heart of Little Saigon. Sure it can be a madhouse.
Besides sandwiches and desserts, there's the usual assortment of Vietnamese snacks and pastries. The Vietnamese French bread was just light enough with just enough crackly crust. Banh Phong Tom (Vietnamese Shrimp Chips) Not a recipe post but an FYI for people who aren't familiar with shrimp chips. Hmm. Who doesn't know what these are? OK, you caught me. It's a lazy post. Anyway, the shrimp chips above came from frying these poker-like chips below. Banh phong tom (Vietnamese shrimp chips or prawn crackers), or krupuk in Indonesian, whatever you call them, are made from a mixture of shrimp and starch. If you are adventurous, you can make your own like Sijeleng of Javaholic, who made krupuk udang (Indonesian prawn crackers). Otherwise, look for similar packages below.

One in Westfield, one just outside. We always used to go to the one outside - until they decided to take over and own the one inside as well.
