The nearby Sinchon area mainly offers the big franchise coffee chains, but there is one which may be considered a bit more independant: the Hello Kitty Cafe. Curiously, there’s one in Taipei (Taiwan) and there used to be one in Hong Kong as well. However, there’s none in Japan. Hello Kitty’s Kawaii Paradise at the VenusFort in Odaiba, Tokyo comes close as they sell pancakes there, but it’s more of a theme park. There is a Hello Kitty Cafe in Hongdae and in nearby Sinchon. For the Hello Kitty Cafe in Sinchon, get off at Sinchon Station (the one between Hongik University and Ewha) line 2 exit 3. So how is the cafe? That’s pure Hello Kitty heaven – or hell, if you are not into the cute Japanese cat.

Of course they sell Hello Kitty toys as well and since she’s a nice cat she also wears the Korean traditional Hanbok. People around me would know that I’m not a big fan of pink anythings so I was dreading to get into this cafe. I don’t hate it or anything but I get chills really often when I see such cutesy stuff. Surprisingly when I walked in, it had this soothing vibe that was comfortable and peaceful. Pink overload, no doubt, but the ambience was set perfectly for a nice conversation over a cup of coffee with your friends.

From the subway (Exit 5, i think), you will have to make an immediate left and walk into a place that looks somewhat like a park near Dunkin Donuts. This is right below the Coffee Prince cafe. I grew up with Hello Kitty and my daughter loves Hello Kitty so it was pretty much a given that we'd be excited to pay this place a visit. :D We went with friend and fellow blogger Didi! Coffee with Character ~ Seoul Searching. Seeing as Korea is an Asian country, most might assume that its people's drink of choice would be tea.

That may have been true in the past, but in the late 1800s, King Gojong was introduced to coffee by the Russians and was quick to start importing the stuff into Korea. Since then, its people have developed an obsession for the drink and can't seem to keep their hands off of it. There are aisles in grocery stores stocked solely with instant coffee, which is sold in small packages mixed with prim, which to my understanding is artificial sweetener, and a powdered creamer.

Women carry it in their purses and boxes of it are stored in offices.. it's just as necessary as A4 paper or ballpoint pens for workplace production. It's also a popular gift during important holidays, like Lunar New Year and Chuseok. Coffee shops have also blossomed throughout the country; it's impossible to walk down any street block without coming face-to-face with a Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, or Tom and Toms.
