Justice Antonin Scalia is fond of saying that constitutional interpretation is easy as pie – you simply follow the text of the Constitution and you reach conservative results – but the Supreme Court’s most famous originalist is notoriously inconsistent about applying this textualist approach, particularly when the Constitution’s text and history point in a progressive direction. A good example is the Fourteenth Amendment’s guarantee of the equal protection of the laws. The Equal Protection Clause was written to secure equal rights under the law for all persons, redeeming the Constitution from the sin of slavery and bringing the Constitution back in line with the Declaration of Independence.

Rush Limbaugh Is Racist, Here Are 46 Examples | Oliver Willis
Conservatives have claimed for a long time that Rush Limbaugh isn’t a racist, that this image of the conservative thought leader is an invention of the so-called “liberal media.” This list exposes that for the lie that it is. It is a selection of Limbaugh comments, largely from the last 5-6 years (Limbaugh has been on the air for decades, but only has been closely monitored since Media Matters’ launch in 2004).It contains numerous articles that I've written over many years, as well as a large selection of primary documents, plus bibliographies and useful links to other websites on LGBTQ history. The Homophobic Imagination
by Rictor Norton and Louie Crew The following essay is the editorial written for The Homosexual Imagination , a special issue of College English , the official journal of The National Council of Teachers of English, which was edited by Rictor Norton and Louie Crew in 1974. Part 1: Introduction Homosexual literature is written, read, criticized, and taught within a generally hostile environment. Although we may argue about the degrees of such hostility, and although we may debate its precise nature with regard to different kinds of repression, suppression, and oppression, this pervasive hostility is nevertheless an indisputable fact. To recognize this is to appreciate the sociology of literature. After Michael Steele’s failed attempt to give the GOP a “hip hop” makeover , many Republicans hoped newly-elected Congressman Allen West could boost the Party’s outreach to African American voters . Today, West expressed his concerns about DC residents’ lack of representation , as Washingtonians don’t have a voting member of Congress. In one of the first votes of the session, the Republican majority stripped the DC delegate’s ability to vote in House Committees, a move West supported . While West floated the idea of “an exclusionary zone” where “District residents do not pay federal taxes” since they don’t have a voting member of Congress, he went on to say that the African American-majority city and black voters across the country may only have themselves to blame for their political marginalization since black voters consistently support Democrats:

Former Navy Chaplain Worries Ending DADT will End “Gay Exorcisms” | Religion Dispatches
While that’s true, it doesn’t help those struggling with their homosexuality due to religious and societal condemnation to come into contact with people like former Navy chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt. Americans United notes that “Klingenschmitt claims he was drummed out of the Navy because he wanted to pray in the name of Jesus. In fact, he got tossed out for being insubordinate” as he violated military regulations forbidding servicemembers from wearing their uniforms to partisan events. His discharge from the military has made him a hero to the religious right, a role he has embraced. At the end of July, Blue America and our pals at the Americans For America PAC launched the first in a series of videos that highlights what kind of people now lead the Republican Party. We featured Sarah Palin, Rand Paul and John Boehner . And we asked the readers at DWT , C&L and Digby's Hullabaloo to tell us who to do the next ad for. Lots of votes for Ken Calvert and Michele Bachmann but it was North Carolina reactionary haridan Virginia Foxx who got the most votes . As you can see in the ad above, there are a lot of things that the voters in western North Carolina need to think about when they consider returning Virginia Foxx for another term in Congress.

In a letter to Google CEO Larry Page today, French data protection regulator CNIL has warned Google’s new privacy policy appears to violate the European Union’s data protection rules. As our research published today shows, nine in ten people haven’t read the policy, with 47% of people who use a Google service regularly not knowing any change was being proposed. The way Google collects and uses personal information has been a concern for privacy groups around the world, and the new policy will allow Google to combine everything it knows about you to better target advertisements – which is after all how it makes its money. We have called for the company to not implement the new policy until its impact is fully understood and consumers can be confident there is adequate privacy protection in place.Inside the Meter We've created a new page so you can see Truth-O-Meter items that have a correction or update. Crossposted from Video Cafe Ann Coulter, a controversial backer of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, suggests that conservatives should begin attacking President Barack Obama's two young daughters. On Wednesday, Fox News host Sean Hannity told Coulter that liberals had been "feigning outrage" over radio host Rush Limbaugh calling Georgetown University law student a "slut" because she wanted contraception to be covered by her health insurance.

So called "doctor" Dr. Phil continues to give bad advice to millions of families across the nation when it comes to the subject of sexual orientation and gender identity. His current advice column suggests how to "fix" a gender variant child and another part of his website paints LGBT marriage as "extreme". Whether it's giving a platform to transphobia , bi-phobia or anti-gay voices there seems to be a fairly consistent message that paints our community in a damaging and inaccurate way. Dr. Phil has been most inaccurate and down right offensive when it comes to the transgender and gender variant community.
