La Mauritanie avait bien compris cette donne dès son accession à l’indépendance. Même si la recherche scientifique ne fut pas considérée comme un choix stratégique par les fondateurs très occupés par l’affirmation de la souveraineté nationale (1) , une attention particulière fut tout de même accordée aux quelques laboratoires hérités de la période coloniale. Ces laboratoires ont été les embryons des organismes nationaux de recherche scientifique créés dans les années 70 (Institut Mauritanien de Recherches Océanographiques et des Pêches (IMROP ex CMROP), Centre National de Recherche Agronomique et de Développement Agricole (CNRADA), Centre National de l'Élevage et de Recherches Vétérinaires (CNERV) etc).
