Several states are reconsidering their commitment to the Common Core standards and the aligned assessments. As a result of an uneven implementation process, parents are unfamiliar with the standards, and educators across the country have concerns that they have received inadequate support and have not been sufficiently engaged in the implementation process.
Further, many teachers are apprehensive about the use of student performance on the new assessments in teacher evaluation. New multimedia tools and social media networks are sprouting up on a regular basis. Even our old friends, like Facebook and Twitter, are coming up with new ways to add to the proliferation of information we see each day. Add to that what educators regard as a confusing Fair Use policy, and teachers are at times leery to jump into the pool of Web 2.0 creative opportunities for their students. Unfortunate, but necessary, as those who create work need to be protected from unscrupulous use of their creations. True, Fair Use is purposely contextual in application. Common Core, or as Arizona calls it, Arizona's College and Career Readiness Standards, states, To build a foundation for college and career readiness, students must read widely and deeply from among a broad range of high-quality, increasingly challenging literary and informational texts....By reading texts in history/social studies, science, and other disciplines, students build a foundation of knowledge in these fields that will also give them the background to be better readers in all content areas. Some school districts are purchasing "common-core aligned" curriculum to help their teachers find those complex texts in other disciplines. However, many school districts do not have funds for this. Teachers are left to search endlessly on the internet to find informational texts at their students' reading levels.

A few years ago, Tina Cheuk, a project manager for the Understanding Language initiative at Stanford University, woke up one morning, printed out several new sets of standards, and started cutting.
"I was frustrated," she said in a phone interview yesterday. Looking at the Common Core State Standards in English/language arts and math, along with the framework that would become the Next Generation Science Standards, she said, "I felt overwhelmed. And that was my full-time job looking at standards. " Cheuk, a former teacher, saw patterns in the standards and began organizing them accordingly.
She came up with this Venn diagram, which shows how the practice standards overlap (you can also find it, with a key, here): With the common standards, "there are changes in the content—it's deeper, more focused—but it's these practices I think that are going to move our students," Cheuk said. Decoding the Text Types, Part 2: Where Has... When I was in high school, I wrote a lot of expository essays.
I mean a lot of expository essays. Through these writing experiences, it became my impression that there were different kinds of expository essays, but that each pretty much had its own blueprint. Furthermore, I came to believe that these types were distinct, self-contained, and that they didn’t really mix with other writing forms. That’s what I was taught. Yet despite all my early work in expository writing, it wasn’t until I became an adult writer that I really came to understand what “expository” actually means.
According to Merriam-Webster, the word “expository” is “used to describe writing that is done to explain something.” The answer is neither. Although young children are not able to produce fully developed logical arguments, they develop a variety of methods to extend and elaborate their work by providing examples, offering reasons for their assertions, and explaining cause and effect. BELS Consortium for School Library Media Centers. The NJCCSS are the state-mandated standards for New Jersey's students since June 23, 2010. BELS adamantly supports the mission of the NJCCSS and strongly recommends that all New Jersey school librarians keep these standards in mind when designing units of study and their library's collections.
