Crown Hill: DIY: Magazine Bowl. I made this bowl a couple of years ago while Daniel and I were visiting his parents in Michigan. It is made from magazine pages that I picked specifically for their bright colors. I've seen this project on various blogs here and there, but I think Cindy brought it to my attention way back when. We had quite a few lovely crafting days at her house. 1. Cut magazine pages into strips. I think mine were about 2.5 inches thick. 2. 3. 4. 5. When my bowl was finished and the glue was dry, I sprayed it with shellac to make it shiny.

(+our wedding music) If you’ve been following my blog, you know how I made 60 of these painted frames with song lyrics for our wedding decorations /favors… Well, a lot of wedding guests loved them and took one home, but we had a ton left at the end of the night, which we boxed back up and took home with us… So we now have 30 of them hanging on our big white living room wall!
Yay!! There are several duplicate lyrics, some of which I already changed out to engagement photos, but once we get our wedding photos I’ll switch out some more lyrics with photos (but just a few, because we love the look of the lyrics!) : So, hey, you want to know how to make these yourself? I made 2 different types of painted frames: textured frames that were just plain spray painted, and smooth(ish) frames that were painted with lace used as stencils. I did them in batches of 6-10 at a time – sprayed 1 coat over them all, then went back with a 2nd coat over them all. For the lace stenciled frames, there are a couple extra steps. A Minimal DIY Desk Fan. I'm bracing myself for an impending heatwave this weekend (with a yet-to-be-determined end date) and am realizing now just how gosh darn hot my office gets -- without a heatwave! In anticipation, I've been looking at possibly adding a small fan or two to my space, when BAM!
I spotted this adorably minimal DIY desk fan. Isn't it just the cutest? Even more awesome is the fact that this puppy will function year-round: it also has a built-in heater for those chilly winter months. It's still totally DIYable, but if you've never worked with electrical components, seek help or input from someone who has. Check out the full tutorial and lots of photos over on Instructables! Happy New Year Welcome to 2013! In "Uncategorized" Roping In Style: Discard Bench Makeover. Piece by piece we are getting closer to a finished SK8R boyz bedroom redux. The pieces and projects are all planned and we are still on track to be done by the end of the month. I am very anxious to finish and share the results with you. Today we are making over a bench which was on its way out. This was a perfect solution for a bench in the reading area of the bedroom. Savour... hardware aisle chic Get the rest after the jump... Woven Rope Bench Before you start: Check your local home improvement center for other types of rope to suit your needs. Make sure to get the right sized staples. This job can be done solo, but it would be easier with two. Working from back to front is imperative. You will have far fewer side to side ropes than back to front ropes. As you place more side to side ropes the tension will build making it more difficult to manage.

Make the Pop Tab Strips Measure and cut the nylon string into 16 segments, each 12 inches long. Cut an additional 8 segments, each 6 inches in length. The string will be used to tie the pop can tabs into strips that will be sewn together to create the front, back and side panels of the purse. Using the 12-inch-long segments you will make nine strips for the back and flap of the purse, five strips for the front panel, and two strips for the bottom of the purse. Using the 6-inch-long segments you will make four strips that will make up the two-strip wide sides of the purse. Take one tab in your hand.
The fat side should point to the bottom of your hand and the smooth side of the tab should be facing up. Place another tab on top of the first tab so that the tabs are staggered. Cross the strings, top over bottom, so it makes an "X" (like you're lacing shoes) and thread them through the top and bottom holes of both tabs. How to Make Paper Pencils (tutorial) I have always wanted to make my own pencils, but the thought of shaping two pieces of wood to allow a piece of lead to sit perfectly inside made me think it wasn’t worth the effort. For some reason I was looking at some pieces of lead I have (for a drafting pencil) and “pop” there it was.. a solution to my DIY longing.
Here is a tutorial to make pencils that is so ridiculously easy I’ve made 10 pencils since the idea came to me yesterday! Enjoy. Paper: I recommend using 6″ origami paper. The paper I used was beautiful washi origami paper made in Japan (see exact product here). I did attempt using other paper I had for card making and scrapbooking, but the paper was too thick and didn’t act like a skin when rolling the pencil.Lead: The lead I used I originally bought from a craft store in South Africa.
I had a bit a of struggle finding it online, but turns out you can get the exact lead I used on Amazon for a steal at $3.90. I have to admit I really enjoyed doing this craft. Leads {here} Makekind: a guest column by laura parke of a girl who makes. This week I’m sharing a simple, yet somewhat time intensive project. It’s a catch-all of sorts made from sheets of cardboard.
I did this project in steps so it didn’t seem so daunting – it’s worth it because the end product is custom and so, so useful. Here’s how to make your own! : MATERIALS // 25 pieces of cardboard measuring 10″ x 10″, straight edge ruler, a pencil, glue, utility knife with plenty of extra blades. STEPS // 01 MEASURE YOUR TEMPLATE Using the straight edge and a pencil, measure a 1″ border on one piece of cardboard. 02 // CREATE TEMPLATE Once you have everything measured out, use a utility knife to cut out each compartment to create a template. 03 // MAKE YOUR PIECES Using your template, you’ll cut out 20 sheets of cardboard, like this: 04 // GLUE PIECES TOGETHER First, glue 5 uncut pieces of cardboard together to create a bottom. 05 // KEEP GLUING Next, take the 10 pieces that have the two cutouts and glue them right on top of the stack of cardboard. MAGAZINE ENVELOPES. 18K+ Well I got this idea from our friend Nina. She was making these super cute envelopes out of scrapbook paper and I really wanted to make some!
So I came home and made some! They are so so SO simple and add a personal touch to your envelopes. You will need: An old magazine, scissors, an envelope, a glue stick and a Sharpie. Tear out some magazine pages that you like. Carefully pull the envelope apart. I failed at this miserably but was able to make it work. Trace the envelope on a magazine page. Cut the envelope shape out. Turn the envelope over as well as the magazine cut-out. Unfold everything and separate the magazine cut-out from the envelope.
Glue the bottom flap down to the two side flaps. And you've made your own envelope! The great thing about making these envelopes our of magazine pages is that the envelopes have a character all of their own. A Wordy Egg. Over in Beyond Beyond towers we have one weakness, of the Achilles Heal variety and it is eggs. Scrambled, poached, sunny side up, boiled – whatever way you can imagine them we have had them in all the many fangled ways that you can imagine! What we have never had is an invitation in an egg and this exploded our minds not even blew them. How to Make Clothing Buttons from Shrink Plastic… This tutorial is an old one of mine that’s too good not to share again. Since posting the first time, I’ve had lots of questions about these buttons which will hopefully be answered in this revised post. Equipment Some handy notes: 1. The buttons. The buttons are cut from shrink paper. The brand of shrink paper I used was called Shrinkles which I got from the UK. Single hole, hole punch (like this one here). 2. 3.
Okay.. lets get started! Tracing tips: You can use either coloured pencils or permanent pens. Words must be writted backwards in order to be readable. Shrinking the buttons: To shrink the buttons, you can use an oven or a heat gun (the kind used for embellishing). After the buttons have twisted and twirled, and are LYING FLAT, it’s time to take them out. Note: If the skrinking is taking too long, you may need to turn your oven up. Here’s a short little stop-motion to make sure you’ve got the gist of how easy this is! So far I’m doing pretty well with my wreath, some burlap covered candles, some personalized coasters and this past weekend I gave a try at some jewelry. You may have noticed how wrap bracelets are everywhere lately. Chan Luu bracelets are extremely popular these days. They come in singles and also in wraps.
I love love the look of these bracelets. I did the top bracelet by simply following this tutorial. 1. 2.Bring your needle up under the right cord through the center and pull the thread through. 3. 4. Earlier this week I ran across this felt bowl at Supermarket – isn’t it cool? I’ve always wanted to work with thick, industrial felt but have yet to buy any. (It’s more expensive than I’d like…) But I do have lots of leather. This is scrap suede purchased from Hobby Lobby for 2.99/bag. At first I thought I’d make a pattern out of paper, but that wasn’t going anywhere and I started to get frustrated.
I just wanted a natural, organic shape anyway so I decided to just begin. I used a box of binder clips to hold the 4 pieces of leather together while I worked the general shape into a shallow bowl. When I was happy with it I went around and used my hole punch to make holes where I wanted to add rivets. Then I inserted and set the rivets. Tagged as: bowl, decor, home, housewares, leather, rivet.
