Ultraviolet Light Therapy. Sunlight is a traditional treatment for psoriasis, as, over time, many people with the condition have found that their skin clears up in the summer months or whilst on holiday abroad.

Ultraviolet Light Therapy

However, as with all aspects of psoriasis, this is not the rule for everybody, and there are some people who find sunlight makes their psoriasis worse. Modern medicine has been able to pinpoint the specific part of the light spectrum that is helpful in psoriasis; ultraviolet light, and then the precise wavelength of ultraviolet light.

Special molecules (chromophores) present in skin cells are able to absorb the energy from UV light, and use it to power chemical reactions that affect the function of the cells. In psoriasis, this can mean a slowing down of the multiplication of skin cells, making them behave more like normal skin. UV therapy is one of the first treatments that a Dermatologist may prescribe, and can be used on its own or in conjunction with another treatment. Psoriasis: Treatments and drugs. Light therapy is a way to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD) by exposure to artificial light.

Light therapy

Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that occurs at a certain time each year, usually in the fall or winter. During light therapy, you sit or work near a device called a light therapy box. The box gives off bright light that mimics natural outdoor light. Light therapy is thought to affect brain chemicals linked to mood, easing SAD symptoms. Using a light therapy box may also help with other types of depression, sleep disorders and other conditions.
