DuPont Caught Covering Up Deadly Risks of Chemical that’s in Nearly Everything & Everyone. Thousands of people have filed lawsuits against DuPont for poisoning them with a chemical that causes birth defects, multiple types of cancer, and death. According to internal DuPont documents and emails, the company knew about the health risks to their employees and local communities but covered up the data in order to increase their profit margin. After decades of dumping this toxic chemical into the ocean, rivers, landfills, and the air, DuPont has contaminated the bloodstream of nearly every American with this non-biodegradable chemical. In 1946, Teflon was introduced with an essential ingredient known as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or C8.

According to internal DuPont documents, an employee named R.A. Dickison noted in 1954 receiving an inquiry into the possible toxicity of C8. Seven years later, a group of in-house researchers discovered that C8 was toxic and should be handled with extreme care. Emerilware. 1. How should I use my Emerilware™ cookware? If you have never cooked with Emerilware™ before, you may be surprised by how efficient it is.

Start using your Emerilware™ on a low flame for all applications except boiling. Because our cookware is built to hold heat and distribute it well, you will find that low temperatures using Emerilware™ are comparable to medium to medium-high settings using other cookware brands. When preparing to sauté or fry, preheat your cookware a minute or two on a low setting. Often, after cooking, there are browned bits left on the pan. 7725682 - Neuropsychological &Thyroid Effects of Perfluorinated Compounds in Older Adults - Collective IP.

DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are new and emerging chemicals of environmental concern that have neurobehavioral and thyroid effects in animals. Very few studies however, have evaluated whether they have similar effects in humans. An epidemiological study is proposed to examine the association between exposure to PFCs and nervous system and thyroid function among older adults. It builds upon an ongoing study of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated biphenylethers (PBDEs), and dioxin-like compounds (DLCs) by adding PFCs to the profile of analytes being measured. Older men and women were selected as the target populations because they are potentially sensitive subpopulations that are already at risk for age-related neurological deficits, a process that may be accelerated by neurotoxins. Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) FactSheet - NICNAS. Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) form a group of chemicals that has many speciality applications. They can provide resistance to heat, to other chemicals or to abrasion, and they can be used as dispersion, wetting or surface treatments. PFCs have been used in non-stick cookware, in specialised garments and textiles, in Scotchgard™ (used to protect fabric, furniture, and carpets from stains) and in some types of fire-fighting foam. The best known examples of PFCs are: perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS)—which is in the perfluoroalkyl sulfonate (PFAS) family of chemicals, andperfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)—which is in the perfluorocarboxylic acid (PFCA) family of chemicals.

How PFCs affect human health and the environment Certain PFCs are of concern around the world because they are not broken down in the environment and can persist for a long time, accumulating to levels that can be harmful to living systems. Who uses PFCs in Australia? NICNAS's role NICNAS has: International efforts Recommendations. Get Un-Stuck! 7 Nonstick Cookware Alternatives. Unless you’ve been living under a pile of perflourochemical-coated pots and pans, then you know it’s time to ditch the nonstick. Why? Until recently, the majority of nonstick cookware was manufactured with perfluorinated chemicals – or PFC’s. These PFC’s (including PFOA and PFOS) are used to make products stain-, grease- and water-resistant. The problem is, when heated, PFC’s break down into perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA, and release toxic gases and particulates into the air at a temperature of only 446°.

PFC’s are highly persistent in the environment have been detected in 98% of the population tested. What’s a heat-seeking guy or gal to do? Ceramic/Nonstick Extrema – This is 100% ceramic cookware. February 13, 2010|164,817views Share Spread the Word to Friends And Family By Sharing this Article. 1,561 1,359inShare A study links thyroid disease with human exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). PFOA is a persistent organic chemical used in industrial and consumer goods including most nonstick cookware and stain- and water-resistant coatings for carpets and fabrics. The study included nearly 4000 adults aged 20 and older whose blood serum was sampled between 1999 and 2006 for PFOA.

The researchers found that the individuals with the highest PFOA concentrations were more than twice as likely to report current thyroid disease. Previous animal studies carried out by other scientists have shown that the compounds can affect the function of the mammalian thyroid hormone system. PFOA is an acronym for perfluorooctanoic acid, a synthetic (man-made) chemical that does not occur naturally in the environment. PFOA is sometimes called "C8. " Companies use PFOA to make fluoropolymers, substances with special properties that have thousands of important manufacturing and industrial applications. PFOA can also be produced by the breakdown of some fluorinated telomers, substances that are used in surface treatment products to impart soil, stain, grease, and water resistance.

EPA’s efforts on perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are not limited to only PFOA. Top of page What are the concerns related to PFOA? What are fluoropolymers and telomers and how are they used? Telomers are used as surfactants and as surface treatment chemicals in many products, including personal care and cleaning products; and oil, stain, grease, and water repellent coatings on carpet, textiles, leather, and paper.

When did the Agency begin looking into PFOA and its potential risks?
