Artists who are also women

Complex asked Vandalog founder-leader RJ Rushmore to create a list for them, “50 Greatest Street Artists Right Now,” and that list came out this month. When I saw it I was surprised. Yes, I know that any person who makes up a list like that would come up with a different list. We volleyed some names back and forth but ultimately my argument was not with his exclusion of any particular artist. If I were RJ and knew the work of as many street artists as he does, I would start with my favorites, and probably run out of room just listing those artists. Consider that the most powerful and the most personal work is not necessarily going to resonate as strongly once it crosses gender lines, which is not a minor point. After our exchange, RJ offered me an opportunity to write a post for Vandalog about women street artists, and I respect him for that.

Mapping the Smells of New York, Amsterdam and Paris, Block by Block. Jenny Holzer - Projections. Consideration should be taken with regard to the magnitude of implications that come with the application of stickers, graffiti and other applications in public spaces.

The public space is shared by everyone and at least a thought must be shown on the possible impact your work could have on the environment and the people who live in it. There is a long-standing debate over street art and vandalism in many parts of the world, and there are many who will not hesitate to declare street artists as vandals, and waste no time to form hyperbole assumptions to situations where street art is encouraged. Just like how street artists do not see the appeal of large advertisements taking shape all over the country, these same people who push for the prosecution of these street artists do not see the appeal in street art and graffiti.

It is about the control of public space, of censorship. These people are organized and lobby for public support. "Chez la Street artist Samantha Lo" article Les Inrockuptibles 22/05/2013. Magda Sayeg - Knitta, Please.
