Scenario shows how Seattle could achieve deep emission reductions by 2050 - Stockholm Environment Institute. Written by Marion Davis Tuesday, 09 August 2011 05:31 The carbon-neutral scenario envisions a substantial increase in biking – a goal shared by participants in Seattle Bike to Work days. FLICKR/Don Brubeck Cities are home to half the world’s population, consume over two-thirds of the world’s energy, and account for more than 70 percent of global CO2 emissions. Recognising their critical role, several cities are now seeking to become leaders in mitigating climate change. The Seattle Office of Sustainability and Environment (OSE), which is drafting a new Climate Action Plan for the city, hired SEI and its partners Cascadia Consulting Group and ICF International to develop a carbon-neutral scenario. Seattle Monorail passing the Space Needle. Making it happen The resulting scenario suggests that implementing a full suite of emissions-reducing strategies could cut Seattle’s per capita greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% by 2020, 60% by 2030, and 90% by 2050, relative to 2008 levels.

Ippr - Institute for Public Policy Research. Our evidence suggests that volunteer-run community groups can make important contributions to cutting carbon through energy projects. But there are limits to these groups' capacity and they need to be supported by and work in partnership with private and public sector actors.

Green Streets is a unique challenge, run by British Gas, that is generating important lessons about the role community projects can play in cutting carbon emissions, and about the opportunities and challenges involved in creating the 'Big Society'. Acting in an independent capacity, ippr is conducting a range of quantitative and qualitative research, to generate lessons from Green Streets about the potential of community energy projects, the barriers to these projects, and the solutions needed to overcome these barriers. C’est ma première Climat’ party | Psychologies.com 3.6 Beta 4. Voluntary organisations in Wales are being encouraged to learn more about how climate change may affect them. The Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA), which represents 30,000 Welsh community groups, is focusing on the issue at its annual conference.

Environment Minister Jane Davidson is among those speaking to the event at Venue Cymru in Llandudno, Conwy. The WCVA's Graham Benfield said the voluntary sector had a big role to play in tackling climate change. The WCVA has more than 2,500 members, including a wide range of organisations working on issues such as housing, economic regeneration, childcare, community development, transport, the environment and health. Its conference, The First Step Is The Hardest! Climate Change For Non-Greens, is hoping to attract voluntary organisations that have not yet engaged with the climate change agenda. "They have a responsibility to reduce their own carbon footprint but also they need to understand how climate change will affect their clients. Best Practice Review of Community Action on Climate Change | Pro.

Reporting how community initiatives can normalise pro-environmental behaviours This review of best practice highlights the potential for community-led climate change initiatives to stimulate significant reductions in carbon emissions and to normalise pro-environmental behaviours. The potential for community-led initiatives to create embedded behavioural change across several strands of sustainability (i.e. energy use in the home, transport, recycling, food) is an important one. Whilst the Energy Saving Trust is primarily concerned with energy use in the home and transport, meeting the Climate Change Act’s target to reduce emissions by 80% by 2050 will require a broader adoption of pro-environmental behaviours. The majority of environmental campaigns implemented by NGOs and the Government tend to focus on the simple steps we can take to live a greener lifestyle or targeted measures, such as loft or cavity wall insulation. < Back to projects. Promoting and supporting community-based energy projects with a major national programme NB CSE is no longer running this programme on behalf of the Energy Saving Trust, and this page will be updated shortly to reflect this. You can read much more about the programme on the Green Communities pages of the Energy Saving Trust website: www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/cafe Green Communities is a programme from the Energy Saving Trust that aims to support, facilitate and promote community-based energy projects.

Green Communities is the new name for Community Action for Energy (CAfE); CSE is the managing agent of the programme. Above all, Green Communities is a network of 'members' - who might be individuals, schools, communities, groups or organisations involved in energy projects (see case studies below). There are around 4,000 members as of summer 2009, and the number continues to grow as more and more people become interested in starting energy projects in their community. < Back to projects.
