Synology DS1511+ NAS - Unbox, Setup & Overview. Inc. Network Attached Storage - NEW NAS Experience -View topic - DS411+, 3TB HD's and going from RAID 1 to 5 over time.... Hey John, I cannot comment on your questions about whether those 3TB drives are supported or whether you can easily migrate from RAID 1 to RAID 5; I suppose we are both too lazy to scour the manual.

I can, however, offer some advice that might help you, as I currently have the DS-411+. A question for you is: Why are you getting a 4-Bay NAS and setting it up with 2x 3TB Drives in a slow RAID1 configuration? A quick search on Amazon shows that the 3TB Hitachi drives are >$200 each, whilst the 1TB variety is $70. That means it will cost you $400 for 3GB of space using 2x 3TB drives in RAID1. Why not just get 4x 1TB drives, and throw them in a RAID5 configuration which will give redundancy in case of a single drive failure? I currently have a setup with 4x 1TB WD Black drives and the thing chugs along great. As a side note, RAID configurations aren't truly backups.

Feel free to comment on any of the above. Our New Synology 1511+ NAS. Synology DiskStation DS1511+ - A Beast of a Network Storage Solution

A Beast of a Network Storage Solution. Synology’s DiskStation DS1511+ is pretty much their top-end product for now, discounting their lineup of rack-mounted storage solutions. What’s more, if having five drive bays and the potential of 15TB of storage isn’t enough for you, Synology also offers expansion capabilities via a pair of DX510 storage boxes, which connect to the DS1511+ via eSATA. As each DX510 box also accommodates the same number of drives, this brings the total storage potential of the DS1511+ up to a whopping 45TB. Granted, not many small or medium businesses will have this much data hanging around, but given the cost of investing in a DS1511+, having the option is certainly welcome. Software-wise, Synology regularly updates their excellent DiskStation Manager software, with DSM now hitting version 3.2.

Installation is easy enough, simply screw your hard drives to the drive bay racks and slide them in. Compatibility Synology Inc. Inc. Network Attached Storage - NEW NAS Experience -View topic - DS1511+ pre-sales questions (vs qnap TS-559 Pro II) Hi, Thank you all for the replies.

Following the first reply I had also sent my question to Synology's support team, and I though I would share their answers (very similar to the post from other users) here, since they sometimes added some interesting details. I must also point out that Synology's team was extremely quick to respond and they gave, although brief, precise answers. To summarize, this is 100% opposite to my past inquiries with Western Digital's support staff, which was slow, incompetent and most of the time did not answer (understand?) The questions. This being said, here are their answers and some of my comments: a1. a2. a3.Link aggregation requires that the switch support active mode 802.3ad LACP. a4. a5. a6. a7. --> Actually, the release notes don't mention Bittorrents on private sites.
