At the recent DICE2010 conference, Carnegie Mellon University Professor Jesse Schell gave a presentation on the future of game development after the “Facebook Era”. It’s a fun presentation that discusses the recent upsets in the gaming industry (the Wii, Rock Band, Mafia Wars & FarmVille, Webkinz, and more) and what brings them together: Psychological Tricks. In addition, he discusses how these same tricks are popping up in other places like university grading schemes, hybrid cars, and other surprising places you’ve probably never thought up. To conclude, he puts forth a proposal where the world is driven by game theories and advertisements combined with ubiquitous sensors. Fascinating stuff, if not just a tad bit far-fetched. Randall Hand is a visualization scientist working for a federal research lab, aiding researchers to discover the insights buried within their terabyte datasets generated on some of the most powerful supercomputers in the world.

Gamification gets its own conference | VentureBeat

If a trend gets big enough, it usually gets its own conference. That’s the case with “gamification,” or the use of game mechanics to make non-game material more engaging. That’s why organizers have created their first annual Gamification Summit 2011 .
