Business at the clinic is winding down. It's 10.30am on Thursday and the six women and three men sitting on the rows of blue plastic chairs and wooden benches are waiting to be seen before the doctor leaves in half an hour's time. On the walls are large posters listing methods of contraception; diagrams of how to spot possible signs of breast and cervical cancer, and how to breastfeed a child. It's stiflingly hot; the three ceiling fans do little to cool the air. Two morning sessions with the doctor are held at Pudu clinic, a 25-minute drive from the centre of Kuala Lumpur. The clinic offers a range of medical services, but focuses on providing family planning and reproductive healthcare to marginalised groups.

While it’s International Women’s Day tomorrow, many of us at infoDev are trying every day to make women, specifically women innovators, central to our strategy of supporting high-growth entrepreneurs in developing countries. But this is easier said than done as women are notoriously under-represented in tech-related industries and even more so in the area that I work in – clean technology – which is largely manufacturing and therefore male, dominated. http://blogs.worldbank.org/psd/7-tips-to-support-the-next-wave-of-women-led-innovation-in-ethiopia

Mali chaos gives rise to slavery, persecution

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/mali-chaos-gives-rise-to-slavery-persecution/article5186368/ When radical Islamists in northern Mali began chopping off the hands of accused thieves and stoning unwed couples to death, the world was shocked by the brutality. But few noticed exactly who the victims were. The first to be persecuted were Mali’s most vulnerable people: the descendants of slaves.
Vor 50 Jahren begann die Geschichte der Arbeitsmigration nach Österreich. Eine Gruppe aus Historikern und Migrationsexperten fordert nun ein Archiv der Migration. SIBAGAT, Philippines (ILO News) – Jayson Canete wanted to pursue a degree in engineering after he graduated from high school, but he had to quit school at 19 to help support his family. He took whatever job was available, working as a laboratory assistant and at a fast food restaurant. “I felt hopeless because I could not find regular work,” he said.
