Harry Roselmack : "La France raciste est de retour"

LE MONDE | • Mis à jour le | Par Harry Roselmack (Journaliste) Depuis longtemps, la France joue au bras de fer. Sa République contre sa société. Health outreach programme brings migrants in from Malaysia's margins. Business at the clinic is winding down. It's 10.30am on Thursday and the six women and three men sitting on the rows of blue plastic chairs and wooden benches are waiting to be seen before the doctor leaves in half an hour's time. On the walls are large posters listing methods of contraception; diagrams of how to spot possible signs of breast and cervical cancer, and how to breastfeed a child. The rhetoric and reality of Roma rights. “It’s about Europe.

The rhetoric and reality of Roma rights

It’s about you.” So goes the official slogan marking 2013 as the European Year of Citizens. But, if you happen to be one of the European Union’s six million Roma, you might well be forgiven for doubting the inclusiveness of such rhetoric. As we celebrate International Roma Day on 8 April, one of Europe’s largest ethnic minorities faces increasingly widespread discrimination, racially motivated violence, forced evictions and segregation. More than a decade after EU anti-discrimination laws were adopted, EU member states are failing to enforce these laws to combat this discrimination. Horea Street, Baia Mare, Romania, July 2011, when the local authorities built a 2m-high wall separating the housing occupied mainly by Roma from a non-Roma neighbourhood. In the area of housing, Amnesty International and other organizations have documented forced evictions of Roma communities in several EU countries, including Bulgaria, France, Greece, Italy, Romania and Slovenia. The New Guest Workers: Germany Must Offer Its New Migrants a Reason To Stay

The crisis has driven people away from their native countries, but if they are to make Germany their permanent home, it has to offer them some good reasons to stay. Our society isn't capable yet of being as relaxed about diversity as other immigration countries," Manfred Schmidt, president of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, told the newspaper Die Welt. The fact that a modern economy has to compete for the best minds is something Germany is now trying to learn on the quick. Monika Varnhagen, head of the Central Foreign and Professional Placement Department at Germany's Federal Employment Agency, says that after 2005 she was busy finding jobs abroad for unemployed Germans. 7 ways to support the next wave of women-led innovation in Ethiopia. Once known for its large-scale emigration, Greece transitioned to a country of destination for Central and Eastern European immigrants after the fall of the Soviet Union and other communist regimes in the region. More recently, the country has become one of entry and transit for hundreds of thousands of unauthorized immigrants from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

As a result, Greece is now grappling with issues related to its highly porous borders, mounting asylum applications, faltering immigrant detention system, allegations of human-rights violations, and the effective integration of the country's many foreign-born permanent residents. At the same time, Greece is struggling under the weight of what is perhaps the country's worst economic recession in recent memory.
