I've lived at home during my first year and I really regret it. It's much easier to make friends if you're living in halls. Otherwise, you come in every morning and everyone's talking about what they did last night, and you missed out. I've saved loads of money by living at home, but you only go to university once, so I think you should make the most of it. "Looking back on my first year at Newcastle, I like how the uni is right in the city, but life is also centred around the union, so it's like a campus and a city university in one. Sophie Cousins, 22, third-year environmental sciences student at the University of East Anglia "As a disability student I hid all the problems I had for nearly two years of my course, not wanting people to know and being embarrassed about explaining it.

"My advice to new students is: don't be put off by the new fees. Universities. Degree in stand-up comedy. "The theory and practice of stand-up comedy" is to be taught as part of a university degree course.

Degree in stand-up comedy

The University of Kent has appointed stand-up comedian, Oliver Double, to teach comedy classes as a year-long course unit within a drama and theatre degree. Students taking the stand-up course will learn in the classroom about comedy before testing out their skills in pubs and clubs. The humour lessons will be part of a degree course that stretches from stand-up to Shakespeare and radio production to modern European drama. "We're delighted to be able to offer a course in stand-up. Oliver Double has written a book on the subject, and his course, part of our third year teaching and practice option, is already fully booked," said the university's head of drama, Chris Baugh.

This will not be the first time that academic respectability has been given to stand-up comedy. Back to top | BBC News Home | BBC Homepage | ©
