Apple's Procurement Strategy « Spend Matters Spend Matters

In 2012 alone, Apple sold more than 120 million iPhones, 60 million iPads, 35 million iPods, 15 million Macs – staggering numbers, to say the least. The success of the world’s biggest technology company has come on the back of a robust supply chain network. Foxconn, a Taiwanese company, is one of its strategic supply partners that churn out tens of thousands of its flagship products each day. Manufacturing for Apple isn’t easy. Sales estimates are difficult to forecast, and for such complex products, the time to market is extremely short. Recently, news surfaced that Apple is planning to award more business to a relatively unknown company called Pegatron. Risk Diversification: Many analysts feel that the motivation behind the addition of a new supplier is to diversify supply chain risks.

Burt’s Bees intends to lay off at least 70 workers in conjunction with outsourcing its distribution efforts in Morrisville, but the company taking over the warehouse operation is expected to offer jobs to many of them.

Burt's Bees outsourcing dictates layoffs

Spokeswoman Gabrielle Prohn said the company, which is owned by consumer products giant Clorox, can’t yet specify how many people will be hired by the new distribution company, Exel Logistics Co., and how many will end up losing their jobs. “Burt’s Bees and Clorox are making every effort to see that people are keeping their jobs,” she said. Burt’s Bees, which makes lip balms, lotions and other products made from mostly natural ingredients, has a total of 355 employees at its Durham headquarters and its manufacturing and distributing facility in Morrisville. Exel will operate the distribution facility solely for Burt’s Bees. Prohn said the move puts Burt’s Bees in line with the operations of other Clorox companies.

Cut to pea supply contracts. SIMPLOT Australia has told a number of North-West pea growers their produce won't be needed this season.

Cut to pea supply contracts

Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers pea growers group chairman Stewart McGee said growers in the early region would not be offered contracts this year due to the increase in imports and the lift in farmers production. "The pea yields have lifted significantly over recent years due to better irrigation practices and better farming," he said. Mr McGee said that the decision to not renew contracts would impact on less than 20 growers. "It's only about 10 per cent of the tonnage that comes from this area and Simplot will continue to source from the eastern side of Devonport, Sassafras, Moriarty, Deloraine, Longford, Hagley and Cressy districts," Mr McGee said. "Growers are getting better at growing and getting better at yields, the requirements for hectares is less and contributing to it as well.

" "Australia's vegetable imports are up 16 per cent from the year before," Mr Gurney said. OIL prices have sunk following a bearish US oil inventory report and amid speculation that the Federal Reserve quantitative easing program could be curtailed sooner rather than later. The price of US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for July delivery settled at $94.28 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, down $1.90 from Tuesday.

The price of European benchmark Brent North Sea crude for delivery in July closed at $102.60 per barrel in London, a drop of $1.31. The market sell-off followed a US inventory report that showed crude oil inventories declined by 300,000 barrels last week, less than the 600,000 drop forecast by analysts in a Dow Jones Newswires survey. Even more dramatic, gasoline inventories rose by three million barrels, whereas analysts had predicted a 100,000-barrel decline. The gasoline figures were "weighing on the complex," Again Capital trader John Kilduff said of petroleum investments. New NZ law – many consumer supply contracts potentially illegal by late 2013. Speedread This is the first of a series of articles dealing with one of the most radical contract law changes for years affecting all suppliers of goods and services: the unfair contract terms regime under the new Fair Trading Act amendments coming into force later this year.1 An Australian regulatory report this month on closely aligned law shows how NZ suppliers could potentially breach the new Fair Trading Act obligations.

The report gives specific examples of clauses that aren’t compliant (and wouldn’t be compliant in NZ too). Those clauses are frequently used in NZ supply contracts. From our experience, most detailed standard form supply contracts will be in breach.
