Last year, I started every second grade class by having the students do a 5 minute addition or subtraction practice using the Math Trainer from Math is Fun. I opted to use Math Trainer for several reasons. First, there are no sounds or flashy animations to distract the students. Second, they don't need to press an additonal key to enter their answers.

Third, they are motivated by changing colors on the screen. Fourth, there is a timer and a score.
