Making Sense Of The Internet Of Things

Editor’s note: Matt Turck is a managing director of FirstMark Capital . Follow him on Twitter @mattturck . The emerging Internet of Things — essentially, the world of physical devices connected to the network/Internet, from your Fitbit or Nest to industrial machines — is experiencing a burst of activity and creativity that is getting entrepreneurs, VCs and the press equally excited. The space looks like a boisterous hodgepodge of smart hobbyists, new startups and large corporations that are eager to be a part of what could be a huge market, and all sorts of enabling products and technologies, some of which, including crowdfunding and 3D printing, are themselves far from established. Presenting our first #TheDigitals superstar of the week: @WillPScott Congratulations to our very first #TheDigitals Super Star of the Week: @WillPScott! In his own words, Will is a "Self confessed geek, working in online/social media" and has certainly worked his social to acheive this lofty and much-coveted position by being an all-star social sharer this week, promoting the biggest and best awards in Digital to his followers and creating genuine engagement (that means no hashtag spamming, plenty or ReTweets and genuine mentions). Congratulations Will! http://econsultancy.com/uk/nma-archive
Juniper Research predicts big uptake for in-car connectivity, which may in turn drive Big-Data-derived revenue for telematics companies and car manufacturers. Tablets will grow their share of the overall smart devices market from 10.7% in 2012 to an estimated 16% by 2017 — with a projected 174.5% CAGR between 2012 and 2017. The carrier revenue streams of voice and SMS are being eroded by more flexible and cheaper VoIP/OTT messaging alternatives, whether it’s Skype or Viber or Whatsapp.

It’s a pretty safe assumption that if you’re reading this blog, you’ve seen “The Matrix.” And you may or may not remember the scene where a kid explains to Neo that the trick to bending a spoon with your mind is simply to remember that, “There is no spoon.” So it is with marketing. http://www.fakesteve.net/2010/06/there-is-no-spoon.html

Jeff Bezos Owns the Web in More Ways Than You Think | Magazine

Industry observers see Amazon's entry into the tablet sweepstakes as further evidence that Jeff Bezos may well be the premier technologist in America. Photo: Nigel Parry; styling by Alvin Stillwell/Celestine Agency; grooming by Erin Skipley/Ajentse “What I’m about to show you,” Jeff Bezos says, “is the culmination of the many things we’ve been doing for 15 years.” The CEO of Amazon.com, in regulation blue oxford shirt and jeans, is sitting in a conference room at his company’s spiffy new headquarters just north of downtown Seattle. It is mid-September, exactly one week before he will introduce a new line of Kindles to the world.

All of the videos from last month’s Streaming Media East and Content Delivery Summit event are now online . Of particular note is Dan Rayburn ‘s presentation, “CDN Market Size and Pricing Trends.” Most analysts and research reports that cover the CDN space don’t share their research methods, nor do they really share detailed numbers and pricing information. In the video below, Rayburn does, and it’s worth watching. Our thanks to Quality Tech’s media services division who captured, edited and encoded all of the videos and to Brightcove for making their video platform available to StreamingMedia.com.

Marc Andreessen on Why Software Is Eating the World

Article Excerpt This week, Hewlett-Packard (where I am on the board) announced that it is exploring jettisoning its struggling PC business in favor of investing more heavily in software, where it sees better potential for growth. Meanwhile, Google plans to buy up the cellphone handset maker Motorola Mobility. Both moves surprised the tech world.

Computing power: A deeper law than Moore's?

The energy efficiency of computing is doubling every 18 months IN 1965 Gordon Moore, a co-founder of Intel, first observed that integrated circuits, better known as silicon chips, seemed to conform to a predictable law: since their invention in 1958, the density of components in each chip had doubled each year, and this trend was, he suggested, likely to continue for at least a decade. In 1975 Dr Moore modified his prediction, observing that component density was doubling every two years. In practical terms, the result is that personal-computer performance doubles every 18 months, and has done so for decades, a prediction commonly known as Moore's law. As computers have become mobile devices, however, their users are increasingly concerned about battery life as well as raw performance.
