Camelid and Small Ruminant Services. Louisville Veterinarian. We are excited to introduce a new product for the treatment of joint disease.
We are now using the synthetic joint lubricant “Noltrex” at that is an inert, non-degradable viscoelastic product. This product was developed in Europe as a human product for use in people that were unable to undergo surgery (such as knee replacement) due to anesthetic risks. i.e. elderly and compromised patients that had pain from degenerative joint disease. This product is administered as an intrarticular joint injection and in our Veterinary patients minimal sedation is required for injection. Noltrex coats the joint surface and reduces the mechanical stress to the joint. When a joint has arthritis, the cushion that protects the bones from rubbing together (the cartilage) is eroded. Noltrex is has not been FDA approved in the United States at this time however, Bannon Woods Veterinary Clinic is participating in the ongoing clincial trials. So far the results have been incredible! Bannon Woods Veterinary Hospital.
IRAP is a product used to treat osteoarthritis in horses (arthritis).
IRAP is different from other products because it treats the cause of joint disease and it’s action is aimed at restoring joint lining and cartilage function. Studies performed in Colorado State University show that treated horses demonstrate reduced lameness, improved joint histology (cellular make up) and a tendency towards cartilage preservation. Our clinic has seen resolution of lameness, a general improvement in the range of motion of the joint and a decrease in joint effusion in treated horses. Traditionally the most common intra-articular medication for the management of joint disease has been cortisone injections.
Clinically, with cortisone injections we often see a sudden response and improvement in the degree of lameness that then gradually wears off over a period of time. Bannon Woods Veterinary Hospital. ESWT – Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is used to promote healing in horses and small animals with musculoskeletal problems, bone injuries and soft tissue injuries.
The shockwaves generated through shockwave therapy are pressure waves that can be focused on the skin surface or to a specific tissue depth. ESWT has been proven to increase blood flow, relieve pain, increase tissue regeneration and promotes new blood vessel development. Bannon Woods Veterinary Hospital. What is chiropractic care?
Chiropractic care is a holistic treatment for joint dysfunction. The goal of chiropractic treatment is to restore normal joint motion, stimulate neurologic reflexes, and reduce pain and muscle spasm. An imbalance, or “subluxation”, can be caused by a single traumatic event, or more commonly, through microtrauma or repetitive stress injuries from daily activities and performance. This imbalance can start at the level of the spine, or may start with one limb and cause secondary/compensatory pain throughout the body.
Lower limb injuries cause an alteration in gait, which may subsequently overwork or injure supporting musculoskeletal structures. Who will benefit from a chiropractic adjustment? Serious diseases requiring conventional veterinary medical care must be ruled out and treated before routine chiropractic treatment is begun. How fast will my pet respond to chiropractic treatment? Our system has the ability to take 3D images to better access the extent of tendon damage. We can take a “panoramic view” of the entire fore or hind limb from the carpus and hock down.
This allows us to give you a continuous image as opposed to bits and pieces that often accompany examinations. We feel that documentation allows for better case follow ups to determine and monitor therapy choices. The documentation also allows for an exceptional added value for prepurchase examinations. Bannon Woods Veterinary Hospital. Digital Radiology units, one for use on the farm one for use in the hospital. Digital radiology is used to view images of bone, joints and occasionally soft tissue. The ability to see current and previous bone and joint injuries makes it an invaluable tool in both lameness evaluations and pre-purchase exams.
