Pierre Tardif | Sign Painting, Hand Lettering | Pinterest. Honest Edwardianism Hand Painted Signs in the 21st Century | Dominion Modern. In the 1960's businessman Ed Mirvish began to buy up the period warehouses on King Street West that surrounded his Royal Alexandra Theatre. The Edwardian warehouses were all painted white and so was coined the term, "Honest Edwardianism". That style was particular to Ed Mirvish, so was Honest Ed's, his department store on Bloor and Bathurst. Through a barrage of loud neon signs, witty slogans on hand-painted signs, corney jokes, often at his own expense. That was his shtick, he drew people into the store through old fashioned salesmanship, Ed's shtick. That shtyle, that way of doing things, was particular to Ed and it was passed on to merchandising, from the neon signs outside his various restaurants and store, to the interior signs that advertised and sold his wares.
The signs have been going strong for more than fifty years. Honest Ed signs are produced at break-neck speed on a production line of just two sign painters who are so adept at it, it thrills to watch. Brush Lettering I - the Letterist. Adrien Loret. Brody Neuenschwander Art. Biography Brody Neuenschwander was born in Houston, Texas in 1958. He attended Princeton University, where he was appointed University Scholar, graduating in 1981 with high honors for his thesis on the techniques of medieval manuscript illumination.
Neuenschwander completed his doctorate on the methodology of German art history in 1986 at the Courtauld Institute in London. At the same time he studied calligraphy at the Roehampton Institute. The cross-fertilization that resulted from doing academic and practical studies simultaneously has influenced all his subsequent work. The objects studied by art historians are, for Neuenschwander, things that were made by human hands.
The structure of the atelier and the properties of the materials are as important to him as the social context of their creation. Neuenschwander began his professional career as assistant to Donald Jackson, an English calligrapher living on the Welsh borders. For Neuenschwander this new theory was a revolution.

Which skills will go extinct when the last generations of craftsmen and artisans can’t pass on the legacy of their trade? Forbes recently reported that despite a stubbornly high unemployment rate, skilled trades top the list of the most difficult jobs to fill in America for the third consecutive year. I’ve found some comfort however, in a new documentary following an unlikely renaissance of the lost and invisible trade of sign painting.
Filmakers, photographers and now writers, Faythe Levine and Sam Macon teamed up to write a book and produce a documentary movie all about the lost art, profiling sign painters young and old, who actually use a brush, paint, tools, and old-school techniques to create beautiful shop signs, sky high murals and generally produce some of the most stunning typographic art in the world… Here is an overview of the project: via The Jealous Curator From the Vault.

It can more or less be attributed to the back to craft mentality and movement that seems to be inundating all forms of art. I have not been spared, but on a personal level I find sign painting very nostalgic and it reminds me of my own childhood. For a few years when I was pretty young, no older than seven or eight, my dad made immaculate carved wood and hand painted signs as a way of subsidizing his woodworking business. I would often travel with him on the job and get to watch while he sketched, taped and finally painted a sign. This specific sign painter Jacky Georges is obviously a skilled veteran and hold over from the generation before vinyl die-cuts and quick crappy window solutions.

Everyone seems to put Paris on a pedestal for its beauty, but quite frankly, if you look closely, there’s some really ugly signage out there. (Trust me, I used to design signage!).
Ironically, the more that fonts and design software becomes available for general consumption, it does not mean that people use it right. After I posted the picture above on Instagram from one of my evening strolls in Paris, the likes and comments led me to believe there really is an appreciation of good hand painted signage even in this day and age. Anyway, it all got me excited for Faythe Levine’s latest film (you may remember her from Handmade Nation) where she’s teamed up with Sam Macon: Sign Painters. These guys sure look like characters. So when I discovered that there is a sign painter behind some of my favorite spots (and logos) in Paris, I was super excited. Jon Contino Artist Study. This past Friday the 6th and 7th grade students and I watched a short video of the typography artist Jon Contino. I wanted to show the students his work because not only do I think that it is creative and fun, but his video shows how hard he worked to get where he is today. The students first watched this inspiring video of Jon talking about his art work and then wrote three words to describe Jon.
The kids came up with fun, hard working, determined, caring, and cool. After this, the students used Jon's lettering as a guide to influence their own hand letter in class. The students created their names, first using pencil, and then tracing over it in ink. Jon lives in Brooklyn currently and works constantly.
