Arizona TrailDEX. Ten Essentials of Hiking. A while back, I was getting ready to lead a moderate day hike in Pickett State Park, in association with the Sierra Club's Fall Family Weekend.

Ten Essentials of Hiking

On the way to the trailhead, I made a few comments about the Ten Essentials. It was clear from the response of the group that few of them had ever heard of these critical items. After providing the group with my 10 minute canned lecture on the Ten Essentials, someone said, "Why don't you write an article? " Of course, this topic has been covered in many other hiking guides and wilderness books. But, here it is anyway. With all the "excitement" that the wilderness can throw at you (weather, critters, rough terrain, accidents), it seems to be only common sense that the hiker should be ready to meet it with at least the bare minimum of equipment. Hikers are greeted by bubbling Denny Creek right from the trailhead. The trail cuts through the dense forest along the cliffs of Denny Creek, crossing the creek after about .5 miles. The trail begins a shallow ascent as it passes beneath the pillars of the stunning I-90 viaduct, winding upward into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. ©Jenni Denekas The trail winds downward, presenting hikers with a soggy Denny Creek crossing. Although most weekend hikers turn around at Keekwulee Falls after a quick on-the-trail-lunch, adventurous hikers can continue along the trail as it switchbacks up the mountainside. Reviewed by mcamp on Tue Apr 10 09:13:00 2012It was raining hard in Seattle and it rained harder the farther East on 90 I went and the temperature dropped from 45 in Seattle to 36 at the trailhead. I pushed hard up the trail to the turn to Granite. The switchbacks were tough, kept getting wet and colder. The avalanche chutes remain full.
