Ascend is actually owned by Providence Equity Partners, which just acquired Blackboard for $1.64 billion. Financial terms of the PrepMe deal were not disclosed. Education Software Company Renaissance Learning Acquired By PE Firm For $440 Million. After Blackboard was acquired by Providence Equity Partners for $1.6 billion in cash, fellow educational software company Renaissance Learning (Nasdaq: RLRN) has been bought by private equity firm Permira Funds for $14.85 per share in cash, or approximately $440 million. Renaissance Learning creates school improvement and student assessment technology programs for K through 12 schools.
The company’s software, which is being used by 70,000 schools, helps assess monitor progress in a variety of subjects, including math, reading and more. The software help provides tools to personalize the learning experience and manage the daily activities for students of all levels. The company says the transaction represents a premium of 26% over Renaissance Learning’s closing stock price from yesterday. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2011. CamiApp Lets You Digitize Notes On Paper Notepads With Your Smartphone (Video) Japanese stationery maker Kokuyo has come up with an easy way to digitize and permanently store what you jot down on paper notepads: all you need is a an iPhone (or soon Android handset), a special app called CamiApp (available for free and in English on the App Store), and notepads made by Kokuyo.
The company says that taking pictures of the notes is enough: CamiApp adjusts the quality through using AR markers or a black frame before it lets you tag, edit, email or store your notes on Evernote or Dropbox (as JPEGs). The startup licenses textbooks from big publishers like McGraw Hill and converts them into interactive web and mobile learning courses. Today, BenchPrep announces its expansion beyond college admission test prep. It will now offer courses to assist with high school, university, law, medicine, professional certifications, army, and more. It’s also releasing a new evaluation tool that determines a student’s weaknesses in a given subject. BenchPrep is the future of the ‘education anywhere’ movement. The diagnostic tool and additional courses should help the 7-month old BenchPrep build on its existing base of 200,000 users, 7,000 of which are paying customers. That means better grades with no prank calls and no inappropriate advances. Let’s say a teacher wants to check if students understood an in-class math lesson.
